Charlie Montgomery wins the Desoto Truck Feature at Desoto Super Speedway
By Tom Blakeley
What a great night of racing at Desoto Super Speedway. With the season winding down and the points race coming to a close and the car counts not as big as usual, the drivers really got after it and made for some really exciting racing. It was a racing fan’s delight. Of course with TBARA Winged Sprints in the house it always means great racing.
The evening got off to a bang with three TBARA Sprint heat races. These real sprints appeared to be faster than we have seen them before, and they were flying!! The results of these three heats were as follows:
Heat #1 First place: Bo Hartley in car # 0z Second place: Brad Davis in car # 4D Third place: Kipp Beard in car # 66x
Heat #2 First place: Joey Aguilar in car # 52 Second place: David Steele in car # 91s Third place: Larry Brazil in car # 21B
Heat #3 First place: Troy DeCaire in car # 68 Second place: D J Hoezle in car # 15 Third place: Blaze Martin in car # 5
Pure Stocks then took over the track with force. This class is so evenly matched that they make for real exciting racing. On lap two Robert Crisp and Allen Bragg literally got tangled up on the backstretch and came to rest on turn three. After being pulled apart, Allen Bragg was sent to the rear. There was also a caution on lap eleven for debris on the track. At the finish it was Robert Crisp taking the checkered flag in the # 2 car. Troy Thiem in the #18 car took second place, and a very respectable third place for the current points leader Randy Johnson in the Silver Bullet #73.
The Desoto Trucks were up next and man what a show! There was a complete inversion of the field to start the race. Chris Huntoon in the #30 truck was on the pole and this was his first Truck race since moving up from the Sportsman Class. Kyle Mussleman in the #07 truck lead thru lap six with Danny Anderson taking over the lead on lap seven. At this point Charlie Montgomery in the #12 truck had already made moves from starting in 10th position to now being 3rd. Tyler Lau in truck #51 battled the entire race and he took 4th on lap #28 and held it to the finish. The thirteen-year-old Nick Hernandez in truck #37 drove at Desoto Super Speedway for the first time tonight and did very well. He finished 8th in the field and drove a hard race. Going to Victory Circle with the win, was Charlie Montgomery in the #12 truck. Finishing second was Brent Huber in the #64 truck. Third place belonged to Stephen Darvalics in the #41 truck.
The intermission was kept to a short 10 minutes and the staff at Desoto Super Speedway did a great job in keeping it short so that the racing action could continue. It was now Rockem-Sockem Bomber Time, a time to spread joy, fellowship, and paint! Veteran driver Jerome Watland in the #31 car made his return to Desoto Super Speedway tonight. This race can best be described as good, hard racing. The drivers were really going at it hard and heavy. Winning the Bomber feature was Steve “The Hammer” Elder in the black and blue #42 car. John “The Mayor” Stewart in the #02 car was second. Current points leader Michael “The Punisher” Crooks in the #33 car took third place.
The TBARA Winged Sprint feature race was next. David Steele in the # 91s car, put on a driving exhibition as he started in the 11th position and by lap number 10 he had already taken over first place. He won the race and went on to Victory Circle. Troy DeCaire in the #68 car was closing the gap between himself and Steele but ended up in second place. Bo Hartley drove a great race and took command of third place in his # 0z car. Some of these lap times were in the low 13’s and looked wicked fast.
The last event was the Street Stock feature 25-lap race. Casey Hall in the #11 car started on the pole and led the race for 22 laps before having to pit for a drive shaft problem. James Nanney in the #6 car was running very close to Hall the entire time and took over first place on lap-23. Robert Haygood got his # 84 car back together and was back on the track for the first time this year. The race winner was James Nanney in the #6 car. Second place was Alex Abbott in the #17 car. Third place was Robert Haygood in the #84 car.
Next Saturday November 22, the racing action will begin at 7 P.M. A very special Ladies Powder Puff race will be part of the fun along with Modified Mini’s, Magic 4’s, Bombers, Pure Stocks, Street Stocks, Limited Late Models. Join us for a night of good old-fashioned family fun at the races. Desoto Super Speedway is located just 9 miles East of I-75 on State Road 64. For more information please call 941-748-3171.
