Charlie Montgomery wins the Truck 50 Lap Feature at Desoto Super Speedway
By Tom Blakeley
November 1, 2008 Bradenton, Florida) It was a great night to be at the races tonight. The weather perfect made the action incredible. The Racecars of Yesterday started the action with two 8-lap Heat races. There were 7 cars in each heat and it was really fun watching the old flathead and early V-8’s tear it up. These same “celebrity” cars were used to make the Movie Greased Lightning.
Appearing for only the second time this year was the Bandolero’s. These great looking little cars just fly around the track and are only an inch or two off the ground. They first ran a 6-lap Heat race that was won by Donovan Ponder in the #8 car. Critter Saile took second in the #12 car and Zach Harris was third in the #54 machine. The drivers of the Bandolero’s are eight to sixteen years old and they run with 30 horsepower Briggs and Stratton sealed engines. The Bandolero cars are not cheap and will cost the owners from $7,000 to $8,000. These cars were designed to be a “go between” a Kart and a Car. They are all manufactured in Harrisburg, North Carolina by 600 Racing.
It was now Rockem-Sockem time. The Bombers were ready to spread the love. The small field ran hard and the race was very close from flag to flag. Jody “The Bad Boy” Collins in the orange #32 car took the checkered flag and drove an impeccable race. Michael “The Punisher” Crooks in the #33 car came in a close second and Clint Roberts in the #44 car was third. There was a battle the whole race between Clint Roberts and Steve “The Hammer” Elder in the #42 car, but Roberts prevailed at the finish line. John “The Mayor” Stewart in the #02 car got a flat tire and had to pull into the infield early in the race. It was a shame because he was running very well until the flat. It was a really good, close race between the veteran drivers.
The Magic 4’s were up next. The race included many thrills and spills but was driven all the way with the good sportsmanship we all have come to expect from this class. Brittany Barr won the 20-lap feature race in the #81 car. Alex Patton in the #13 car drove very hard and took a very respectable second. Placing third and driving fast and tough was Jessica Ostroviskis in the Pink Bullet #91.
The Bandolero’s were back onto the track to run their feature 12-lap race. The winner was Donovan Ponder in the #8 car. Second place and closing in on the leader was Zach Harris, a “Young Gun” in the #54 car. Third place belonged to Critter Saile in the #12 car. The Legends Cars were quickly onto the track and ready to go green. Kory Abbott, who qualified the fastest time in the #5 car, also was the winner of this 35-lap feature race. The 14-car field saw several yellow flags and the competition was fierce and several of the drivers spun out. Alex Kempf in the #99 car was second and Tony Sansome in the #122 car was third. These Legend cars are manufactured by 600 Racing, in North Carolina. The cars are extremely quick and they run with 122 Horsepower Yamaha sealed motors and weigh only 1,300 pounds including driver.
After a short intermission, the Street Stocks lined up and lit it up for 25 laps. The winner was no stranger to the winner’s circle in his white #35 car. Greg Krom drove his usual fine race and got to take his usual place on Winners Circle. James Nanney in the blue #06 car drove a great race after spinning out early in the race, he nearly caught Krom. Casey Hall in the red #11 car was third.
The Trucks took to the track for their 50-lap feature race. The 12 truck field was completely inverted which made for lots of excitement as the faster trucks had to drive their way from the rear to the front. The action started on the first lap as the #07 truck of Kyle Musselman hit the wall hard. There were two complete restarts as trucks were flying everywhere. This proved to be a great race as the battles for 3rd and 4th were very exciting. Taking the checkered flag was the Desoto Super Speedway point’s leader for this class, Charlie Montgomery in his #12 truck. Brett Huber in the #64 truck was second and the miracle man, Steven Nassey was third. The 13-year-old Nassey did an incredible job of driving. Last week he was in a bad wreck at Charlotte Speedway, but he was diving fearlessly tonight. This was one awesome race for the fans to watch.
Pure Stocks took to the field and the 8 car field had to be completely restarted as the #02 car of Robert Crisp and the #89 of Allen Bragg tangled on turn four. That put an unfortunate end to the race for Allen Bragg, as the result was a flat tire and bent rim. The action continued throughout the race and on lap 8 Chelsea Lau spun out and had to go to the rear. Going to the Winners Circle was Randy Johnson in the Silver Bullet #73 car. Troy Meredith drove a great race and placed second in the #75 car. Robert Crisp was awarded third place with some controversy. Dave Davis in the #06 car spun out earlier in the race and sat with his motor running so flagman Donald Smith penalized him 1 lap plus going to the rear. Without the 1 lap penalty Dave Davis would have taken third.
The final event for the evening was the 15-lap feature race for the Racecars of Yesterday. The race included a spin out and the #9 car taking the checkered flag. The #44 car driven by Tom Begen was second and third was John Hanson in the #30 car.
