David Steele Wins TBARA Feature at Desoto Super Speedway
By Tom Blakeley
(October 25, 2008 Bradenton Florida.) It was a great night of racing at Desoto Super Speedway. Except for a few drops, the rain held off and the racing was on. The night got a fast start as Alex Patton qualified in the Magic 4 class at 15.9 seconds. He was the only Magic 4 to be in the 15 second time slot.
The first race was an 8-lap Heat of the TBARA Winged Sprints. Larry Brazil in the #21 car won the heat with Brad Davis in the #4-D car in second, David Steele in the #91-S car third. The second heat race was won by Joey Aguilar in the #52 car with Ben Fritz in the #16 car second and Blaze Martin in the #5 car taking third. Troy DeCaire in the #68 car won the third heat and B. J. Hoezle in the #15 car was second and Mark Gimmler in the #51 car was third.
It was now Rockem-Sockem time. The Bombers took the asphalt by storm. The 25 lap feature was a hard driven clean race with Jody Collins in the orange #32 car winning the race. “The Punisher” Michael Crooks in the #33 car took second, and John “The Mayor” Stewart in the #02 car came in third. There were 2 yellow flags as the #02 car spun out and the #42 car spun out. The bombers put on a great show.
Pure Stocks rumbled their way onto the asphalt oval. This class is so exciting to watch as they are so competitive and the cars well matched. Troy Meredith in the #75 car won the 25-lap feature race. Mark Picksheimer in the #07 car took second, coming in third was Randy Johnson in the silver bullet #73.
The legends were next onto the track. Josh Williams in the #6 car won the feature with Taylor McKeever in the #57 in second and Ted Fildes in the #52 car coming in third.
The Sportmans Class were up next. Roger Welch in the #98 Car won this 25-lap feature race and Wayne Best in the #3 car took second. Rick Case in the great looking #35 car was third.
There was a demonstration skid race. The four cars skidded around the track and Billy Calbert Jr. in the #11 car won it. Christopher Dodson in the # 21 car was second and J. R. Welden in the #13 car was third.
After an intermission that included a Halloween costume contest and Trick or Treating the drivers it was time for the Official’s Race. This race included both Bomber and Pure Stock borrowed cars. This race had it’s share of spin outs and drivers hitting walls but in the end David Calbert (Tech guy) in the # 07 car won the race. Donald Smith (Flagman) took second in the #21X car. Third place belonged to Todd Morey (Announcer) in the #02 car. A great time was had by all the driver officials and they all want to say thank you to the car owners and drivers for the borrowed cars.
One of the most exciting races of the night belonged to the Magic 4’s and had fans on their feet yelling and screaming. The race was really close from flag to flag and on turns 3 and 4 of the last lap Alex Patton in the #13 car passed the #91 car of Jessica Ostrovskis to take the checkered flag. There was a lot of bumping and rubbing along the way that upset some of the drivers and fans, but flagman Donald Smith made the official call that it was “racing to win”. The winner was declared and Alex Patton got the trophy and double points for the win. Jessica Ostrovskis took a tough second and Brittany Barr was third. You have to love these kids and their big hearts.
The TBARA 50 lap feature race was won by none other than David Steele in the 91-S car. Joey Aguilar in the #52 car was second and Troy DeCaire in the #68 car was third. It was a great race that saw David Steele put on a drivers education seminar on how to win. These sprint drivers are all very special, excellent drivers.
Street Stocks were next. The 25-lap feature race was won by James Nanney in the blue #06 car. Roger Welch in the #98 car was second and Alex Abbott in the #17 car was third.
The School Bus Figure 8 race was the last on the agenda. After the #88 bus rolled onto its side the checkered flag dropped and Robert Coon in the 8UP buss had won or so we thought. It was discovered in tech that there was water in the tires of the 8 UP bus so it was disqualified. The first place trophy went to James Volk in the #76 bus. Second place was awarded to Jay Seykora in the #0 bus, and third place belonged to Mark Jackson in the #25 bus.
