David Wilson wins the Super Late Model Feature at Desoto Super Speedway
By Tom Blakeley
What an exciting evening of racing tonight was at Desoto Super Speedway. The action started during qualifying for the Super Late Models. The track was really fast with the cooler temperatures and no sunshine. David Wilson ran an unbelievable 14.484 qualifying run. To put this in perspective the track record for this class in 2005 was set by Darrel Shelnut at 14.33, in 2006 Jeff Choquette ran a 14.37. In 2007 Anthony Campi holds that years record at 14.490. David Wilson’s run stands a very good chance to be this years record holder.
The racing began with the Racecars of Yesterday running two 8-lap heat races. The first race was won by Dave Davis in the #42 car. Tom McDonald in the #22 car took second and Jerry Mullins in #X car won third. The second heat was won by Bill Savage in the #41 car. Dale “Rock” Reigle took the 2nd place position in the great looking #74 car and Tim Brush in the #40 car took third. It is always a fan favorite to watch the Racecars of Yesterday strut their stuff with their early V-8’s and flathead motors. There are some real classic racecars that run in that club. They will be back at Desoto Super Speedway on November 1.
It was time for the very competitive Pure Stocks to take to the track. As Troy Thiem said after the race “We are all so close it is unbelievable. When I look out over my hood and I see through and over the hood of the car in front of me, and the car in front of him, then I look in my mirror and see back through the car be hind me, and the car behind him. I know then we are in one tight race.” And that was how it was for the whole race, very tight, clean, fast racing. Taking the checkered flag was “Rockin” Robert Crisp in the #2 car. Billy Calbert took 2nd in the #07Xcar, and Troy Thiem in the #18 car brought home third. What an exciting race with only one yellow flag for debris on the track.
Next up, Magic 4’s. These kids seem to get faster every week and they all get along so well and are genuinely happy for whoever wins and does well. They set a great example for all the classes of racers. It was Brittany Barr’s night to shine and shine she did as she took the checkered flag in her #81 car that just smoked around the inner track. Chasing right behind her was Jessica Ostrovskis in the pink rocket #91 for second place. Alex Patton came from the rear and battled to a great 3rd place finish. It is so much fun to watch these young drivers do their thing.
Racecars of Yesterday took to the track for their 15 lap feature event. Winning the feature was Tim Brush in the #40 car. Second place belonged to Dave Davis in the #42 car and “Rock Reigle in the #74 car took third place.
The Modified Mini’s were next on center stage. The 50 lap feature was also a 4 car inversion. After 3 yellow flags and lots of bumping and rubbing Dustin Perez in the #62 car went to Victory Circle in first place. Randy Foote came in 2nd in the #29XX car, and Bryan Wagner came in 3rd in the #4 car.
After a short 10 minute Intermission it was the Street Stocks 25 lap feature race. Roger Welch in the #98 car took the checkered flag while Greg Krom in the white #35 car was second. Third place belonged to James Nanney in the #6 car. This was a fast and hard driven race.
Next on the line up was Super Late Models. After a couple restarts the race was under way for 75 laps with no yellows. A scary moment was when the red flag had to be dropped because the #56X car of Chris Staggs and the #70 car of James Glover tangled on turn 4 and one of the cars went up and over the hood of the other. Tempers ignited for a moment but were quickly under control as track officials were on the scene immediately. The laps times were extremely fast and it made for a great race. The winner was David Wilson in the #83 car. On Wilson’s bumper the entire race was Anthony Campi in the #81 car. Those two battled each other all race long. Third place was taken by David Pollen Jr. in the #88 car. This was one terrific race to watch and had the crowd on it’s feet most of the race.
The evening wasn’t over yet because the “Rockem-Sockem Bombers had not had a chance to show each other some “love”. The 25 lap feature was full of action and hard driving. The #12 car of Dustin Strott got real loose in turn 4 and slammed into the side of the orange #32 car of Jody Collins putting Collins in the wall. Collins was able to finish the race but the #32 car just wasn’t the same. The race was won by Steve “The Hammer” Elder in the #42 car who had control of first place from flag to flag. Jody “Part-Time” Collins in the #32 car took 2nd place even after going into the wall. John “The Mayor” Stewart in the #02 car drove to a very respectable 3rd place finish. The points leader for the bomber class Michael “The Punisher” Crooks came in 4th right behind John Stewart. A good time was had by all of the bomber drivers and lots of paint and love were shared.
Next Saturday the main feature event will be the ever fast and challenging Open Wheel Modified class. Come and bring the family to visit our racing family.
