IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
October 5, 2008
DOUG MOFF BACK IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE AT CCMP
By Linda Jericka

Dark skies hovered over the low-banked 3/8 mile paved oval of Charlotte County Motorsports Park in Punta Gorda, FL Sat night, and rain interrupted the activities several times. However, the track was able to get the races in and the night started off with the Thunder Trucks who always put on an exciting show. Tom Pryor out of Naples in the 69 truck finally had his night in the winners circle as he led all twenty five laps to take the win. It was not an easy win for Pryor as he battled with Randy Kile and James Wright for all twenty Five laps trying to keep Kile and Wright who at times were along side Pryor at the line from getting by. Pryor came in first the 63 of James Wright second but was later Dqed in tech so that moved Randy Kile in the 14 truck up to second and third place Chester Lusk was also Dqed in tech that made the 6 truck driven by Chuck Stevens the official third place finisher.

The Desoto champ Carts were the next feature to roll out onto the track at approximately 7:30pm. Although the threatening skies appeared to have kept some race fans away, a sizable (and noisy!) contingent of champ kart family and crew could be seen standing and cheering as the field circled the track for it's pace laps! Brian Scherrer was clearly a crowd favorite, as a group of his friends and family came to the track to cheer him on. When the green flag flew, JD Cordon quickly moved to the point, followed by Alan McKinney in second. Several cautions flew throughout the race, mostly for spins. Once again, fuel mileage would play a huge factor in the final outcome. By the time the checkered flag flew, the champ karts had logged 51 laps around the 3/8 mile track! When the final green flag flew on lap 19, a gasp went up from the crowd as leader JD Cordon started to slow coming off of turn two....he was starting to run out of fuel! As this was happening, Brian Scherrer slipped under Alan McKinney for the lead with Phil Harp moving to second, as several karts got bunched up going into turn three. When the white flag was given, several karts started to sputter, as Alan McKinney started to slow, followed by Scott Hailey. Brian Scherrer crossed the line first, followed closely by Phil Harp in second, with Tim Simmons finishing third.

The Florida Suncoast Outlaw Street Stock came out for fifty laps to see points leader Donnie Ollie Jr in the yellow 09 out of Lehigh make it his fourth victory win in a row. Shane Leonard who is fighting for second place points broke on lap 8 which left it all up to Richie Shepard to chase Ollie down for 50 laps but would have to settle for second place and Austin Craig out of Largo would be third.

They do not call them Road Warriors for nothing took the field next as the returning 7 car “BLAINE LOADED FOR BAER” as track announcer Jason Beckner calls him, seem to have this feature wrapped up from the start. At the half way mark the 97 of Chris Scott caught the Baer and spun him sending Scott to the rear but Baer would have to take his car to the pits to take the bumper off that was dragging from the hard hit from Scott. After all was sorted out the lead was given to Jeff Firestine who went on to win the race Chris Scott out of North Port made it back up to second and Port Charlottes Don Jericka ended up third.

Sportsman saw Steve Gainey out of Bradenton get the bugs worked out of his car this week to make it back to the winners circle for his fourth time which gate him a date with the tech inspectors after the race, who found him legal after a track policy of four wins they check heads. L.J. Grimm out of Sefner would come in second and Ryan Pancoast in the blue 47 out of Buckingham third and Clayton Williams made the trip from West Palm Beach to come in fourth.

In the Open Wheel Modifieds Doug Moff out of Fort Myers sat outside front row and when the green flag dropped got around pole sitter Tony Carreno and lead all 50 laps. Eric Rudd out of Naples was in hot pursuit of Moff for 47 laps when on lap 48 Moff slid up the track a little and Rudd stuck it on the inside and the outcome was that Rudd would be sent to the rear and Moff would retain the lead. With three laps to go and twelve cars in front of him, Rudd let the flagman know he was not happy and Doug Moff would go onto win the Open Wheel Modified 50 lap feature with Scott Klieber out of Naples second Wayne Jefferson would have to settle for third Tony Carreno fourth and Port Charlottes Sean McLaughlin battled with Teddy Nelson for fifth.

The final race of the night was the figure 8 race were Jeff Firstine in a road Warrior, out of Venice was crowned the winner and Derrick Horton in his number 27 4 cly car second and Chester Lusk in a Thunder Truck third.

CCMP Friday Night Go Kart Racing under the Lights saw a large crowd of Karters and family come out to race as the Friday Karting program is really growing with a great bunch of racers and there family who come out to CCMP on Friday nights to race. There will be Go Kart racing friday night oct 10th

Next week Oct 11th the Checkered Flag Sprint Cars return with the T.Q Midgets, Dwarf Cars, Road Warriors, Thunder Trucks, Pro 4 , Fab 4, and Outlaw Street Stock. Call the speedway for any other info at 941-575-7223 or visit the web site at: Charlottecountyracing.com
