The Rocket Man Wayne Jefferson Wins 50 Lapper at Desoto
By Phil Schryver
Bradenton, FL Saturday April 12th 2008. ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway brought out some very familiar names, plus a few we had not heard in a while.
The Open Wheel Modified division put on an exciting 50 lap feature event. There was a 6 car inversion, which put the #0 of Troy Robinson on the pole. Troy is a past champion from Ocala and this was his first visit to Desoto. On the outside pole, was James Glover in the #20. When the green flag dropped, the #0 of Robinson jumped out front, but before the first lap was even over with, the #1 car of Jefferson, who started 5th was already up to the 2nd spot.
It wasn’t long before Jefferson was also able to make his way around Robinson, on lap 4, to take the lead. The #2 of Ralph Bowman and the #15 of Bill Davis also pushed their way by Glover and Robinson to take over 2nd and 3rd place. By lap 15, Jefferson had a huge lead on the rest of the field and started to lap cars. The big battle was between 2nd and 3rd place with the #15 of Davis and the #2 of Bowman were beating on each other’s door panels. On lap 23 Bowman was finally able to wear Davis out and take over 2nd place.
With only 5 laps to go, it seemed Jefferson may lap the entire field, and that the race would end caution free. This was not to be the case though, as on lap 46 the yellow flag came out for debris on the track. This caution would not be a problem for the Rocket Man as he jumped 2 to 3 car lengths ahead on the restart and brought his #1 car home to victory lane.
Desoto Super Speedway also had their first 50 lapper Sunstate Outlaw Street Stock race of the year. William Carlbert Jr. led most of the laps, but was running on 7 cylinders for the last 15 laps. The amazing thing was, he was still able to hold on to a 2nd place finish. Joey Barnes was the winner; he started 6th and had a very good car the entire race.
