McLeod Leads Green to Checkers in Wild Super Late Model Victory
Bradenton, Fl: The thunderstorms were all around the “High-Banks” of DeSoto Super Speedway but not a drop fell as a good field of Super Late Models rolled out for qualifying for their 125-lap feature event.
David Wilson who has had a tough time of it this season running in the ASA clicked off the fastest time of the nineteen-car field, Scot Walters was making his debut in the number 94 machine recently vacated by Wayne Jefferson was second fastest on the clock. Brad Bischoff was third followed by B.J. McLeod and Jeff Scofield.
Scofield, a two time champion in the “Hoosier Cup” All American Challenge Series came into this race tied for the lead in the points with David Pollen Jr. Pollen has run consistently throughout the season keeping his car near the front and out of trouble to stay at the top in the points.
The field was inverted by four cars putting McLeod and Walters on the front row. The green dropped and McLeod was off and running. Dave Pletcher dropped off early with mechanical problems.
Coming out of turn two the back end of Bischoff’s car started to come around. As he tried to correct he made contact with Walters sending himself and the 94 hard into the back stretch wall. Cars were sliding everywhere. Joe Boyd who was debuting a brand new car slammed into the pack that was halted on the backstretch ending his night. Cars that were taken out were Bischoff, Walters, and Boyd. Robert Yoho was able to return many laps down. Scofield was able to get on the binders and avoid the mess.
Scofield dove into the pits just before the drop of the green flag. The crew jacked the car up and made sure everything was still in its place. He returned to the speedway at the tail of the field as the green dropped.
McLeod was out like a rocket on the restart but second place Wayne Anderson had his handsful with fast qualifier David Wilson. Lap after lap Wilson challenged the cagey veteran. A little bump-n-go move allowed Wilson to make the move and slide up into the second spot. Anderson meanwhile faded and eventually parked his ride in the infield with an apparent flat rear tire. Anderson finished fifteenth on the night.
Scofield had done some heavy driving to make his way up to the third spot. McLeod, Wilson and Scofield pulled away from the rest of the field and the top three had quite a battle going for the top spot until McLeod was able to pull away. Scofield spent several laps trying to get around Wilson but used up his tires on his charge to the front and began to fade.
As the laps wound down Steve Dorer made his way to Scofield driving him hard and eventually taking over the third spot. On the last lap David Pollen was able to get by Scofield to take the fourth spot and a five-point advantage in the run for the end of season $10,000 share of the championship.
The story though, was B.J. McLeod’s dominance. His last win at DeSoto was in the 2003 Ice Breaker. “I am so glad we decided to come back” Said McLeod in the winners circle “ Jeff Scofield really helped me out with the setup on this car, that’s an 07 setup underneath this thing, I also have to thank Don Wilson for giving me the motor, it was strong all night long”.
David Wilson took the second spot, Dorer was third, Pollen Fourth and Scofield dropped to fifth.
