Anderson and Neumann Share Wins in Citrus L.M. Twin 50's
by Larry MacMillan

With only three weeks left in the Citrus County Speedway point’s races the intensity and commitment by the drivers and owners picked up Saturday night with six divisions racing for championship crowns and spots in the top ten.

The Florida Mini Cup Series brought in the Pro and Junior Divisions plus the PBG Legends locked horns in the Eagle Buick 35 Shootout in a non points race. Due to a pre race rain and the heavy schedule Saturday night’s program was an all feature race card.

Highlighting the evening was the Twin Super Late Model 50’s that saw Herb Neumann Jr and Scott Grossenbacher racing for the 2006 championship with only 4 points separating them coming into their next to last races of the season. This was an opportunity to pick up two race points totals for the night and an $1800 win purse for each race. Time trials saw Wayne Anderson take the fast time with a 13.698 second run on a green track due to a rain shower that delayed the start of the night of action. Wayne drew the #2 pill for the outside pole starting position with Scott Grossenbacher on the inside pole. Anderson won the drag race to turn one and led the 17 car field from start to finish with a few caution flags closing the gap. Grossenbacher qualified second and followed Anderson to the checkers followed by point leader Herb Neumann Jr., Jim Smith and Daniel Webster rounding out the top five.

Anderson drew the #6 pill for race two putting Gary Grubbs on the pole next to Daniel Webster. When the green flew Webster and Grubbs got together going into turn one putting Grubbs into the wall and ending his night while Danny Johnson and Wayne Anderson got caught up in the malay taking Johnson out of the race and leaving Wayne with a damaged racer. On the restart only 13 of the original 17 cars were left and Herb Neumann chased Daniel Webster and Jim Smith for several laps before taking over the lead with Wayne Anderson and Scott Grossenbacher in hot pursuit. When the checkers flew Neumann took the win with Anderson finishing second and taking the Hard Charger Award of $100 from Dave’s Slot Car Racing in Crystal River. Scott Grossenbacher celebrated his birthday with a 3rd place finish followed by Daniel Webster and John Chance rounding out the top five. Neumann continues to lead by 4 points and he and Grossenbacher go into the final race of the season on November 4th in the final shootout.

In Sportsman action Chris Cross won the pole and took off when the green fell and never looked back for his third season win over and an 18 car field. Maloy Kelly, Ernie Reed, Tom Posavec and Bobby Taylor took the balance of the top five slots. Jim Altobelli and Edward Allen came into the Sportsmen feature tied for the point lead and when all was said and done Altobelli went back into the lead by 2 points with a 7th place finish over Allen who finished 8th. The final two races will take them right down to the wire for a final shootout.

In Hobby Stock action, Curtis Flanagan drove from 25th spot to make it two in a row after winning a money protest that tore his car down to the bottom after his win last week. Johnny Zuidema held off Jay Witfoth, Sonny VanOchten and Frank Stromquist over the 28 car starting field that saw plenty of action with most of the heavy hitters having to come from the back of the field when the green fell.

Fifteen Mini Stocks took the green flag with George Neumann all but wrapping up his 4th Mini Stock Championship with his 3rd win of the season from his 8th starting spot. Jesse Henley locked onto the point in the early going and managed to hold off hard charging Clint Foley in the race for second followed by Phillip Joyner and 13th starter Jason Rendell.

Defending Thunder Stock Champion Steven Steindurf continued to show he still has the car and ability to take a win despite not even being in the top ten this season with his 2nd feature win over a 21 car field. Glen Colyer launched to the early lead and had plenty of heat behind him after Stinedurf made the pass. Rick Shahid had to settle for third over Tim Wilson and Louie Cioe finishing nose to tail at the checkers.

Mr. 4 Cylinder Bomber, Justin Durbin, won his 14th feature of the year out driving Neal Durbin to the flag. Bobby Riley came from 13th to finish third over Jeramy Root and Phil Edwards and the balance of the 17 car field.

Brandon Thompson showed the PBG Legends the way to Victory Lane in their 35 lap Fall Shootout followed by Kory Abbott, Stuart Dutton, Mike Verhaugh and Jimmy Rodriquez. In the Florida Mini Cup Pro division pole sitter Doug Smith took all the heat Brett Jameson could give him and held out for the win. Devin McLeod, John Beach and Jerry Parker rounded out the top five. It was Ray Black Jr. in a flag to flag win in the Junior division followed by Devin McLeod, Daniel Miller, Thomas Warnick and Brady Marshall.

Next Saturday night will see more crazy action than usual with the “FALL FIASCO” Featuring an Enduro 150 for $5,000 to win, a Demo Derby, a 50 Lap Figure 8 Special, plus FIGURE 8 SCHOOL BUS RACE, a BOAT TRAILER race and the Open Wheel Modifieds will finish the second half of their rained out Twin 35.
