LAKE CITY, FL (9/30) - Keith Philman made it two wins in a row at North Florida Speedway in Street Stock action. Philman raced from the pole to the lead and spent the first half of the race all alone up front while his competition locked horns fighting for second. A caution on lap seven gave the pack a chance to line up behind Philman and points leader Dean Sands made the most of his chance on the restart by passing Nick Reed for second. In a replay of last week's Street feature, Sands ran down Philman during the remaining green flag run, but could not make a race winning pass and had to settle for second. Adam Bedenbaugh returned to NFS and posted a third place finish with Dewey Hall finishing fourth and Kelly Philman finishing fifth.
Another tightly contested Hobby Stock feature saw a four car breakaway for the lead with Timmy Roach, Scotty Nolan, Sammy Hatcher, and Tim Nolan giving the fans twenty laps of wheel to wheel combat. Hatcher defended the lead for eighteen laps before contact with another car caused him to loop his #1 machine and fall out of contention. Tim Nolan led the remaining two laps to take the win with his brother Scotty Nolan finishing directly behind in second. Roach finished third and was trailed by Heath Walker and Jeremy Rich. Hobby Stocks will run for $700 to win this coming Saturday Night when the Brown Motorsports Summer Spectacular returns for round seven.
Polesitter Frank Premorel grabbed the initial lead in the Pure Stock main but his luck ran out early when his car fell victim to mechanical difficulties. David Kinsey inherited the lead and had to endure numerous restarts caused by the usual bump and grind of Pure Stock action. Things settled down around the middle of the event. Gerald Lewis passed Chris Rowe for second and momentarily appeared to be the only car able to run with Kinsey; however, that moment passed quickly as Kinsey's #58 became stronger as the laps ran out. Kinsey took an easy victory while Lewis had to fight a bit to take second from Rowe. Clay McRae finished fourth over debuting Donnie Dobbins.
The Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association brought their cars of yesteryear to the speedway this evening. While the vintage Sprints and Midgets ran relatively safe and contained events, the Stock division was not afraid to rumble and as a result delivered a pretty good show to the fans. Lonnie Roberts brought his winged #81 Modified to the line first in that event.
Fans got an opportunity to go from seeing the racing to being the racing with a "Run What You Brung" event for street-legal cars. A series of one-on-one oval drag races were played out as spectators locked horns with each other and in many cases found the 3/8-mile oval was not as easy to navigate as it appeared to be from the stands. A relatively new Pontiac Grand Am met its fate with the turn four wall. While the driver was fine, the car was in need of a good paint and body shop. Tyson Obenland drove a red Chevroley Beretta to victory over Jeannie Zimmerman in the finals.
This Saturday night's racing will pay $700 to win in the Hobby Stocks and $600 to win in the Pure Stocks. The Sprints and Street Stocks will also be in action and kids will enjoy a visit from "Lucky Dog", the Nascar Busch and Truck Series mascot. Gates open at 4 PM and heat racing starts at 7 PM.
