Seven Different Winners Drive to Victory Lane at Citrus Saturday
by Larry MacMillan

Despite passing thunder storms and several interruptions Citrus County Speedway pulled off a Super Saturday of Stock Car Racing that was loaded with plenty of action and wheel to wheel competition.

The FASCAR Pro Trucks brought in 22 competitors for their 50 lap chase for the $1000 to win purse from all over Florida opening the evening with qualifying time trials that were delayed for 30 minutes due to an early rain shower. Twenty one trucks went on the clock and the final qualifier George Morales out of Hialeah took fast time of 15.002 seconds on the 3/8ths mile. He drew the number 7 pill for the inverted start that saw all 22 trucks take the green. Wayne Anderson rocketed to the front to set the early pace over pole sitter Dustin Skinner for the first 8 laps before Wayne took it wide on turn two and Skinner ducked under him to take the point.

Several caution flags rearranged the field before it was all over. The final 10 laps were run under green and Daytona’s Dustin Skinner maintained the lead for the win over 7th starter and fast qualifier George Morales. Wayne Anderson held on to 3rd over Kevin Henry out Orlando and 11th starter George Gorham from Lakeland.

Rounding out the top ten were Andy Megronigle out of Lutz, Paulie Harrake from Fair Lawn, N.J., Scott Bishop for Spartanburg, S.C., Ricky Mosley from W. Palm Beach and Patrick Starpoli from Plantation.

Late Models did double duty in two 35 lap feature races opening up the evening of feature action with a 13 car field making up the rainout of August 26th.

Mike Bresnahan launched his new #3 ride from the outside pole and led from flag to flag over Scott Grossenbacher, Herb Hoefler, Gary Grubbs and defending Champion Herb Neumann Jr. Rich Pratt, Herb Neumann Jr. and Keith Zavrel locked in the 3 heat wins in preparation for their second 20 car regular 35 lap feature with the “Wildwood Wizard” Wayne Anderson doing battle with Herb Neumann Jr. and Keith Zavrel before taking the lead and setting the pace to Victory Lane for his 3rd win of the season at his home race track. Neumann held out for second over Scott Grossenbacher, Danny Johnson and Rich Pratt to round out the top five.

Figure 8’s also did double duty making up their rained out August 26th race. All 16 entries were back and when the green fell 6th starter John Thomas wasted little time coming through traffic to take the point for the final 15 laps with Darryl Hage locked onto his rear bumper for a second place finish. Joey Catterelli got the hard charger award from 14th to third followed by Robbie Hage and Charlie Meyer. In the final event of the evening Zach Perry took the green flag from the pole and set the pace all the way to the checkers with 6th starter Steve Anderson in hot pursuit. When the checkers flew it was Perry taking his first win of the season over Anderson, followed by Robbie Hage, Joey Catterelli and Curtis Youmans.

Fourteen Mini Stocks made up the field for their regular scheduled race with George Neumann coming into the evening with the last win and a 17 point lead over Johnathon Camp for the 2006 Championship. Don Faunce and Camp took the wins in the two heat races. When the green fell on their 20 lap feature Clint Foley and Johnathon Camp came through a lot of traffic to run a super match race for the lead both held the lead at one point in the race but Foley was the class of the field with his third win of the season just ahead of Camp, Johnny Siner, Jesse Henley and early leader Don Faunce.

Hobby Stocks came to Citrus 36 cars strong qualifying in three heats and an 18 car “B” Main to make up the 24 car, 20 lap, main event. Heat wins went to John Zuidema III, Doc James Batson and Shaun Cater. Quite a few new cars were visiting from Auburndale. After a crash two weeks ago and major repairs to his race car Doc James Batson launched his dependable #77 from his 8 starting spot, worked his way through traffic on the outside lane and took the point leading the pack to Victory Lane for his sixth win of the season. Early leader Don Teague out ran 12th starter Curtis Flanagan to the flag for a second place finish. John Zuidema III added a 4th place finish to his heat win over Richie Smith who took a flag to flag win in the “B” Main moving from 19th to fifth when the checkers came out.

Next Saturday night will feature the FMRA Midgets, Twin 35 Lap Modified races, Limited Sportsman, Hobby Stock, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers. Another night of excitement at Citrus County Speedway.
