Scofield tops AACS Field, Jefferson Wins Open Wheels
By Rick Anges
Bradenton, Fl. Summer storms were looming all around the speedway as qualifying began for the Hoosier Cup AACS and the Q Auto and Injury Open Wheel Modifieds.
Last years track champion in the Open Wheels Bobby Baldwin took the fast time over the seventeen car field for their 50 lapper and Scot Walters former All Pro late model racer took his first time in the AACS in the twenty car field.
Hoosier Cup All American Challenge Series Five rows were inverted by the roll of the die putting two of the hardest running competitors in the state of Florida on the front row, Jeff Choquette and Jeff Scofield. These two drivers have had their share of run-ins throughout the course of the year. Scofield was in his own racecar just purchased the week before.
When the green dropped it was Scofield who powered out to the lead with Choquette right on his back bumper. Scofield was the class of the field as his car handled flawlessly in the long green flag stints. He also showed his craftiness on the restarts picking a different spot to start almost every time. Choquette was able to close in on the leader but just did not have the power or handle to take the spot.
Choquette has his own battle brewing with third place Chris Fontaine. Choquette came into leading Fontaine in the point’s battle for the end of the year $10,000 championship money. Lap after lap Fontaine worked Choquette several times getting under him but couldn’t make the pass.
Scofield took the win green to checkers in his new ride impressing everyone, Choquette held on for second, Fontaine finished a solid third, fourth went to Jeff Sloan and fifth was Mike Breshnahan.
Q Auto and Injury Open Wheel Modeifieds The die came up a zero starting the field straight up from qualifying making the front row Bobby Baldwin and “The Rocketman” Wayne Jefferson.
Jefferson who had his problems early in the year has put that behind him and dominated the 50-lap feature building up a full straightaway lead on his way to the win. Baldwin took the second spot, third went to Ralph Bowman, fourth was Perry Brown and fifth Tommy Younkman.
Clear Channel Bombers Scott Dawley had only two races under his belt in his brand new Bomber but that didn’t matter as he raced like a seasoned veteran on his way to his first feature win in only his third race at the “South’s Fastest Short Track”. Larry Brannon made him work for his first win though as the duo raced hard in the twenty-five lap sixteen-car feature.
“This is great,” said an excited Dawley. Brannon took the second spot, third across the stripe was Randy Johnson, fourth was Rick Germony and in fifth Pete Barr.
