Florida 100 Belonged To Brandon Johnson

By Matt Prieur

Jason (L-R) Jeff Choquette, Brandon Johnson and Jason Boyd

Samsula, Florida - The third race of the 2007 Season in the ASA Late Model Series Southern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts is now complete.

The historic 0.500 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval of the New Smyrna (FL) Speedway located Eight miles West of New Smyrna Beach and 15 miles South of Daytona Beach in Samsula, Florida was the site for the Florida 100 Presented by FLF Racecars.

The home of the “World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing”, served as gracious hosts for the ASALMS Southern Division on a very hot and humid evening in Eastern Florida and when the checkered flag waved, Longwood, Florida Rookie, Brandon Johnson emerged as the winner after a thrilling battle with New Smyrna favorites, Jeff Choquette and ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier, Jason Boyd.

Johnson, who started on the outside of the front row, took the lead from pole-sitter, Travis Cope and the 22-year-old Sunshine State driver in his unsponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo withstood heavy pressure from a slew of different drivers and would go on to score his first career ASALMS Southern Division Feature Win in just his third ever start.

Choquette held off Boyd for second while 16-year-old Brian Blum finished a career high fourth after holding off Current ASALMS Southern Division Overall and Rookie of the Year Points Leader, Sean Bass who would round out the Top Five.

ASALMS Northern Division invader, Jason Taghikhani, who made the haul from Hales Corners, Wisconsin made his trip worthwhile with an ASALMS career high sixth place finish over Wayne Morris, Beau Slocumb, Travis Cope, and Chris Fontaine completed the Top 10.

Earlier in the evening in ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Qualifying, home track favorite from near-by Clermont, Florida; Jason Boyd took his first career ARP Bodies Fast Qualifier Award in his first career ASALMS appearance. Boyd, who has turned thousands of laps around the Samsula. Florida speed plant, turned a fast 18147 which measures out to 99.190 MPH.

Also earlier in the night, Daytona Beach, Florida Teenager, 14-year-old Chad Akins started on the pole and led all 25 laps to score his first career ASALMS win in the GM Performance Parts Shootout Earl Beckner finished second and also transferred.
