A sunny Sunday afternoon greeted the fans and competitors to the Souths Fastest Short Track for the second annual running of the LeRoy Porter Icebreaker 125.
Although the Icebreaker has been a tradition at DeSoto for many years this was the second year the race was dedicated to one of the top Late Model aces, LeRoy Porter. Porter was severely injured in turn three during a practice run when his car crashed and was engulfed in flames while he was trapped in his car ending a brilliant carrier. Porter was a previous winner of the event.
The field of twenty-three of the states top Super Late Model drivers rolled out for qualifying including the return of Big Daddy Dave Pletcher. The racers who came out early had a hard time hooking up to the track but as more made the trip around the 3/8s mile track the faster the times were. The Rocketman Wayne Jefferson, who won the event last year, took the fast time beating out Pletcher, David Wilson, Billy Bigley Jr. and last years champion Jeff Choquette.
Six cars were inverted with the roll of the die putting Steve Dorer the 07 Limited Late Model champ and owner of Racecar Engineering on the point with Jeff Choquette on the outside of row one.
Dangerous Dan Toler formerly of the Allman Brothers Band was the Grand Marshall and after giving the command of "Gentlemen Start Your Engines" and then climbed into the flag stand to drop the race.
Choquette jumped out to the early lead with Dorer on his tail in the second spot. Fourteen caution flags marred the race one of which was a solid lick into the front stretch wall by Robert "Showtime" Yoho wiping out the entire right side of the machine.
Scofield who started in the seventh spot was coming off a disappointing run at Citrus County Speedway the night before. After leading the majority of the race a broken rotor dropped him to second in the finish. Scofield made his way up to the second spot and once again the Jeff and Jeff show was on.
The duo has had many battles at the High Banks Scofield was able to get the nose up on Choquette and make the pass. Scofield would dominate the rest of the race at one point having almost a 4.5 second lead. This is one I hadn't one yet This a blast winning the LeRoy Porter race we just won the Pete Orr Memorial so this means a lot Said Scofield in the winners circle.
Steve Dorer the 2007 Limited Late Model champion finished a solid second, third went to Billy Bigley Jr., and fourth across the stripe was Jimmy Cope and fifth Jeff Choquette.
