Anderson Evens Score in Governor's Cup Chase
by Larry MacMillan

(Inverness, FL. 11/6/04) The second leg of the Triple Crown race saw the Anderson – Scofield battle tighten up for the final race for the Governor’s Cup Saturday night at Citrus County Speedway. Anderson found the groove early in the evening with a fast qualifying time of 13.654 seconds on the 3/8ths mile oval over the 19 car field.

Locals Jim Smith and Daniel Webster qualified second and third followed by Jeff Scofield and 2004 Citrus Late Model Champion Herb Neumann Jr. On the pill draw Anderson drew the 9 inversion putting David Pollen Jr. on the pole with Scotty Crockett on the outside of the first row.

When the green dropped Crockett won the race to the point off turn two and led the race with Pollen Jr., Mike Franklin in pursuit and a side by side race between Herb Neumann Jr. and Chris Hooker in the race for fourth. The first of 7 caution flags came out in lap fifteen when Neumann hooked up with Mike Franklin in the race for third sending them both to the year. Meanwhile Scotty Crockett got caught on the outside lane and watched as Anderson and Jeff Scofield worked on the young guns Jim Smith, Daniel Webster and Chris Hooker taking advantage of their inexperience when the door opened on the low side they moved up to challenge for the lead. Scofield took the lead with Anderson in pursuit when Wayne found the outside working to his advantage he made the pass on the back chute and never looked back.

When the checkers flew Wayne Anderson reversed the finish for the top two at Bronson with Jeff Scofield right in his tire tracks at the line. Young Daniel Webster had a third place finish in the biggest race in his young career followed by Mike Franklin and Herb Neumann Jr. who had to come back through the entire field in 110 laps of heavy battling for position. It looks like an Anderson Scofield shootout at New Smyrna Speedway on November 20th for the Governor’s Cup.

Mini Stocks had a 50 lap special that was cut to 45 laps due to multiple caution flags. Chris Hooker was fast qualifier over the 23 Car field and the pill pull called for the top 14 to be inverted giving Chad Johnson the pole flanked by Rick Sirmons. Clint Foley popped to the front from his third starting spot in the first lap and held on to the spot for all 45 laps. Chris Thornton chased George Neumann for a good portion of the race before he was able to make the pass for a second place finish. Fourteenth starter Chris Hooker worked his way into contention in the final 10 laps for a third place finish in front of George Neumann and second fast qualifier Don Faunce.

Dave Maddox took the early lead in the 20 car, 25 lap Hobby Stock feature but ninth starter “Doc” James Batson made short work of the front 8 cars and set the pace by lap 7 for the win over Curtis Neumann who worked his way up to the nose to tail finish from his 17th starting spot. Tim Whitehead stayed in the top five throughout the race for a third over Pete Close and Bill Ryan.

In the closing weeks of the racing there has been no one hotter than Wayne Heater as he went on to win his third race in a row over the 13 car Thunder Stock field. D.J. Macklin did all he could to hang onto Heater but had to settle for second over Dave Ross, Steven Stinedurf and a new driver Kyle Dubbs, the son of Mike Dubbs, in his first race.

Wrapping up the first of two post season races for the season were fifteen 4 Cylinder Bombers. In the local division 10 cars took the green and for the third time in a row it was Justin Durbin taking the win followed by Shawn Evans, Jeff Stallnaker Jr., Dan Sanderson and Harold Barup. Shane Guy was the overall winner over two locals Mike Curry and Clark Pittsley who put on the slicks that the Auburndale visitors run.

Fans will be treated to the fastest racers ever to run at Citrus as the TBARA Winged Sprints close out their season that began right here at Citrus back in February. This is going to be super show with the Hobby Stocks and Figure 8’s running in 50 lap specials plus Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Thunder Stocks, 4 Cylinder Bombers and a wild Powder Puff reserved for non racing women only. Eleven ladies were practicing last Friday night and this should be some finale to the regular 2004 season.
The annual Awards Banquet will be held at the Citrus County Auditorium on December 10th. Tickets are on sale at the front gate and the pit office on race night.
