East Bay Raceway Park Looses Second Week to Mother Nature
|
by Bill Green "From Behind The MIC!" Tampa, FL (July 17th, 2004) The owners of East Bay Raceway Park will be the first to tell you, "They needed to race." Not just to help pay the bills, but to keep the season long momentum the track has been building in car counts and fan visits. They tried. The racers came and unloaded. The fans waited. The first front hit at about 5:25pm. It lasted just a few minutes. The owners hoped for a break. They got one. The rains ceased. The track was still salvageable. The racers continued to arrive, unload and wait. It looked like the racing might start late, but would be possible. But, then it happened. They all got soaked. And, I mean quickly. The infield was getting the worst of it. The pits drain better than any years past, but after more than 8 inches of rain last week, plus the 1 to 2 that fell from the first front and then the 1 to 2 inches in 10 minutes from the second front were just too much. "We hate it for the fans and the racers alike," co-owner Al Varnadore announced over the pit PA. "We really wanted to get this week in to clear the two extra features, but the weather's just not cooperating. Thanks to all of you who stuck it out with us and we'll let you all know as soon as we make the schedule adjustments." So as the fans and racers headed for home. The officials and track workers buttoned up the facility and headed for home, but the owners remained. They immediately began the task of figuring the schedule adjustments that would be needed to recover the Limited Late Model and Street Stock features to be made up. Not to mention the Twin Open Wheel Modified features that would have to be moved to next month to fit back into the final 14 weeks of the season. Check the East Bay Raceway Park web site for more info or call the track office at 813-677-7223 for more info on the necessary schedule changes. We See You at The Races!
