Harold Cannon Logs Third Citrus Modified Win
by Larry MacMillan

(Inverness, Fl. 7/17/04) Mike Wilson and Harold Cannon shared the front row when the green flew for the Modified 30 lap feature at Citrus Saturday night. Each driver looking for a repeat win ran a side by side battle for the point for five laps before a caution came out to restart single file with Wilson on the point and Cannon right behind him when the green fell again.

Cannon again charged to the outside for a run at Wilson that just didn’t work for the 2 time winner until Wilson apparently ran out of steam with mechanical problems and had to retire to the pits. Cannon took the lead on the restart and had a mirror full of point leader Billy Bechtelheimer for the final 8 laps.

Bechtelheimer had to make his move to the front from the back end of the field due to an early stop in the pits during a caution. With the help of an unprecedented amount of caution flags for these pros Billy B was in the running for making it two wins in a row but just couldn’t make the pass on Cannon who took his third win of the season.

Cannon was only able to inch 7 points closer to Bechtelheimer for the point lead after 8 races for the season. Steven Perez started third and finished third followed by Wayne Jefferson and Kyle Bookmiller. Tommy Schnader won the first heat and was a contender for a top five finish when he ran into mechanical problems that took him out of the feature action. Mike Wilson won the second heat. Modifieds are scheduled to return to action on August 14th and 21st.

Super Stocks made their best showing of the season with 19 racers taking the green flag for their 20 lap main. Ernie Reed launched his #55 off the outside pole and was hounded by James Hendrickson Remax #s3 for the entire race.

Stephen Anderson moved from 8th to finish third and moved up a spot when Hendrickson was D.Q’d for too much left side weight in tech. Richie Smith was an early contender for the lead but had to settle for third followed by 15th starter Frank Buchanan and Rick Kase who started 9th. Reed also won the first heat. Mike Bell won the second heat but wasn’t so lucky in the feature. After starting at the rear of the pack he managed to move into contention for third when he took a wild ride down the front straight wall and over the hill on turn one ending his bid for a third win in a row.

After another DNF last week defending Mini Stock champion Chris Hooker won the heat race and then proceeded to make short work of the 10 car Mini Stock field to win his fourth checkered flag of the season by snatching the lead away from point leader Jim Curry in lap five. Curry was able to hold off the charge of George Neumann who moved from 9th to 3rd when it was all over. Chad Johnson and last week’s winner Lee Davis battled for fourth throughout the race with Johnson holding on to the spot and Davis settling for fifth.

It was a 26 car Hobby Stock field that took the green flag and four consecutive caution flags marred the early part of the race. Dean Lawyer managed to avoid most of the mishaps and move to the point when Curtis Neumann apparently overheated and had to drop out of the race in lap 10.

Despite quite a few more caution flags, Lawyer was able to avoid all the action behind him to capture his fourth win of the season. Bill Ryan started 18th and avoided a whole lot of mishaps on his way through traffic for a second place finish at the checkers. Bobby Taylor followed Ryan through traffic from seventeenth to third followed by point leader Tommy Smith who worked his way from 24th to fourth. Fred Tuski claimed a fifth place finish in only his second race after a three year layoff. Heat wins went to Ryan, Richie Smith and Bob Becker.

Jerry Hoover became another four time winner and made it two in a row as the Thunder Stocks went back to the oval this week. Rex Mullis held the lead for quite a while before having to give way to Hoover who moved from 21st to take the win. Mullis managed to outrun Steven Stinedurf who started 18th. Wayne Heater moved from 19th to fourth when the dust settled for his fifth top five finish of the year. Louie Coie stayed in the top five for all 20 laps. Heat winners were Heater, Stinedurf and D.J. Macklin who wasn’t so lucky in the feature after he and Gary Budek got together on the back chute ending their race early.

Rick Fort took over the ride that Justin Durden had taken to four 4 Cylinder Bomber wins and put it back into Victory Lane for his second win of the year. Dan Sanderson won the heat race but had to settle for a second place finish in their 15 lap feature. Point leader Clark Pittsley logged another top five finish in third followed by Harold Barup and Rusty Adams over the 8 car field.

Next Saturday will see the Late Models back in action in Twin 50 features plus the Open Wheel Lites, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers for a 7 division race card.
