East Bay Raceway Park Races Eight Features To Beat Mother Nature
by Bill Green

Tampa, FL (July 10th, 2004) East Bay Raceway Park ran eight of the scheduled ten A-Main events to thwart Mother Nature’s rain on June’s final Saturday Night of racing. Only Open Wheel Modifieds and Limited Sprints needed heat events to prepare for the night’s racing action, everyone else would use the June 26th line ups for the 1st A-Main and a full points recalculation for the 2nd. In the end, Father Time rescheduled the Limited Late Models and Street Stock second features of the night to later dates.

Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modifieds were up first with David Schmauss and Bill Howard winning the heats. But, the star of the A-Main event would be Jeff Mathews. Scheduled to start in the 12th spot for the OWM A-Main, Jeff found himself starting in row 4 after the loss of several front runners, as they elected to go to the rear. After one red for a cluttered front stretch and several yellows for spins and wall contact, nine cars would finish under the checkered. First would go Jeff as he used the bottom groove to hold on for the win. Second would go to John Bradley, while Bobby Dixon held on for third, Jeff Conyers avoided trouble several time to take fourth and Rick Martin rounded out the top five.

Limited Sprints saw a few new racers on the track as Donnie Maxwell and Tim George powered to heat wins. Donnie Maxwell looked like the car to beat at the drop of the green, but 11 laps later he’d see Rich Alexander and Danny Jones get by just before he spun in turn-4. Alexander held on for the win, with Jones second, followed by Brian Maddox third, Tim Holston forth and Tim George fifth. The tech shed found the #8 of Alexander light, so he would give the first feature win to Danny Jones. Moving Maddox to second, Holston to third, George to fourth and bumping Paulie Milum into fifth.

The first A-Main for Late Models was a good one. Phillip Cobb used his outside row one starting spot to out last the field for the early win. Second went to a hard charging Jackie Nosbisch, Jr. , with Roger Crouse third, Bill Howard fourth and David Schmauss bringing the #007 to fifth. The second A-Main for Late Model’s saw an amazing finish out of turn-4, as David Schmauss went low from third and Keith Nosbisch challenged Jeff Mathews for the win from second on the high side. At the line, the crowd was on their feet, as Schmauss beat Mathews to the line by a foot and a half. Nosbisch had to try the outside run on the leader in turn-3, but settled for third, with Jackie Nosbisch, Jr. fourth and Vince Muzzin fifth. But, it wasn’t over, as Jeff Mathews was found light at the scales and lost the second place finish. Sliding everyone up a spot and bring Trevor Merrill to fifth.

A Main-1 for the Mini Stocks saw Scotty Williams continue his winning ways, visiting Victory Lane for the most wins on the year. Second went to Ryan Mitchell, third to Jason Cannon, fourth to Randy Thomas and fifth to Brian Debore. Mini Stocks saw A Main-2 get exciting early as the #3 of Daniel Bowman, Jr. up side down on the front stretch, as the field was collected on during restart number three. Bowman was OK, but watched the rest of the feature from the stands. Josh Peacock took the win, with Rich Livernois second, Ryan Mitchell third, Jimmy Waldrop fourth and Scotty Williams fifth.

Due to time constraints on the evening, East Bay Raceway Park had to move the Limited Late Model second A Main to next week July 17th to run with the L.H.P. Motorsports Twin-15’s for Open Wheel Modifieds, plus the Late Models, Mini Stocks and Limited Sprints. No Street Stocks on the 17th, so their second feature will run on the 24th of July with Fan Participation Races, plus 360 Sprints, Late Models, Limited LM and Mini Stocks.

We’ll See You at the Races!
