IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
June 28, 2004
Sean Bass Tops FASTRUCKS Feature at New Smyrna Speedway
by Jane Smith

Samsula, Fla. (June 26, 2004) Hot day, slick asphalt, sun shining, clouds drifting, and just plain hot was the order of the day for drivers, crews and fans. After being rained out the weekend before, racers were anxious to get behind the wheel especially for double points. Features only was the name of the game in hopes of beating the always present nightly rains.

First up were the FASTKIDS with Matt Martin on the pole. But it was Dalton Zehr who got the jump on the green and took the lead followed by Matt Martin, Spencer Taylor, Joey Morales, and Amanda Gogal. Lap 4 sees the yellow as Morales and Taylor get together in turns 1 and 2. Taylor gets his third place spot back with Morales going to the rear for the spin. Zehr holds the point on the restart with Matt Martin right on his tail.

Martin looks high, low but Zehr holds strong and keeps the point. On lap 9, Martin's truck slows as he is going for the lead and is done for the night. The yellow comes out to get Martin's truck off the track.

The green comes back out with Zehr on the point followed by Taylor, Gogal, Josh Crenshaw and Cody Pitts. By lap 11, Morales has worked his way back up and into the fifth place spot with Pitts sliding back to sixth. Morales is all over Crenshaw trying for fourth and on lap 18, Morales tries alittle too hard and spins himself out in turrns 3 and 4. Morales is sent to the rear again.

On the restart, Morales jumps two spots and is penalized two spots. Zehr leads the way follwed by Taylor, Gogal, Crewshaw, Pitts and Morales. Lap 23 Morales has worked his way up again and tries to take over third by spins. The yellow does not come out as he gets going right away but on the last lap, Crenshaw spins. Zehr takes the checkered followed by Spencer Taylor, Amanda Gogal, Cody Pitts, and Josh Crewshaw.

A B-Main was run with the top six FASTRUCKS going into the feature 50 lap race but after the B-Main was done, it was decided that all 32 trucks would run. Top six in the B-Main were Bobby Owens, David Pollen Jr., Anthony Barreca, Brandon Anderson, Michael Powers, and Tommy King.

Dewayne Barrus had the pole for the Late Model feature but before a lap was down coming down the backstretch, Sam Watts, Travis Wilson, Don Roberts, and Mark Smith all got together at the pit entrance with the red flag being shown. Smith goes in for some crew repair, David Pletka must pit for a flat rear tire, Watts, Roberts and Wilson are all taken in on the hook and done for the night.

Barrus takes the point on the second start followed by Phillip Bessette, Josh Schmidt, Troy Atkins, and Donald Hess. But it is a short green as the yellow comes out for David Pletka who has hit the frontstretch wall. Pletka is fine but done for the night. On the restart, Bessette takes the point followed by Barrus, Atkins, Hess and Schmidt.

By lap 6, Hess has worked his way into second and takes chase to Bessette. For five laps Bessette holds off Hess's charge but on lap 11, Hess takes over the lead with Bessette going to second. The yellow comes out on lap 13 when Troy Atkins's loses his motor. The track is cleaned and it is green, white, checkered. Hess takes the checkered followed by Phillip Bessette, Dewayne Barrus, Josh Schmidt and Troy Atkins. Mark Smith, who was 3 laps down from the red flag, was sixth place.

James Adams had the pole for the Super Stock feature and quickly took the point on the green followed by Josh Wronkowski, Ron Whaley, Jeff Colburn and Barry Parks. Whaley passes Adams with Colburn and Wronkowski coming thru with Whaley with Adams falling back into fourth. Parks is passed by Mike Hendrix for fifth as Hendrix and Adams go lap after lap fighting for fifth.

While Adams and Hendrix are putting on a great show for fourth place, Colburn passes Whaley and takes over the point. Colburn holds off the hard charges of Whaley and takes the checkered followed by Ron Whaley, Josh Wronkowski, James Adams and Mike Hendrix.

Mark Vandevender lead from green to checkered in the Open Wheel Modified feature. Vandevender set on the pole and won from the pole. Matt Wheeler and Dave Savicki put on a great show as they battled for second but Wheeler held strong as Savicki had to settle for third. With no cautions, it was Vandevender taking the checkered followed by Matt Wheeler, Dave Savicki, Alan Bruns and Max Mock.

Guy Thomas lead the way for the Super Late Model feature and quickly took the point on the green followed by Eric Black, Fain Skinner, Wayne McCall and Jacob Warren. Warren passes McCall with McCall sliding back to sixth and David Rogers coming into fifth.

On lap 6, Guy Thomas brings out the yellow as he spins in turns 3 and 4 after having contact with Skinner. Both are fine and rejoin the field in the rear turning over the point to David Rogers. Rogers leads the way on the restart followed by Sean Murphy, Eric Black, Wayne McCall and Jacob Warren.

On lap 7, Guy Thomas spins again almost in the same spot and retires to the pits for the night. Rogers leads the way on the restart followed by Murphy, Black, Skinner and Warren. Skinner puts the pressure on and passes Warren taking over fourth then passes Black for third by lap 11.

Lap 16, Sean Murphy is all over David Rogers and looking for the point. On lap 20, Murphy gives Rogers a few little "love kisses" just to let him know he is there. Lap 22, Murphy kisses alittle too hard with Rogers spinning coming off turn 4 down the frontstretch. Murphy and Rogers join the field in the rear giving the point to Fain Skinner.

Skinner takes the point on the restart followed by Black, Warren, McCall and Rogers. Lap 23, McCall spins on the backstretch bringing out the yellow. Skinner holds tight on the restart and takes the checkered for his first feature win at New Smyrna Speedway followed by Eric Black, Jacob Warren, David Rogers and Wayne McCall.

Wendell Bristol had the pole for the field of 32 FASTRUCKS. Sean Bass set fast time and drew a 10 pill inverting the field. On the green, Gary Foxworth jumps to the lead but the yellow comes out for George Gorham who has spun in turns 3 and 4. Foxworth holds the point on the restart followed by Bristol, Tim Shaffner, Sean Bass and Brian Luloff.

Lap 3, Vernon Hart goes in. Foxworth holds the point followed by Bass, Bristol, Shaffner and James Wright III. Bass puts the pressure on and passes Foxworth taking over the point on lap 8. Foxworth goes back to fourth with Bristol second, Shaffner third and Wright fifth. Lap 13, Donald Davis retires to the pits. On lap 15, the yellow comes out for Daniel Sasnett who spun on the frontstretch. Bass holds the point on the restart.

Lap 28, Marty Wolf and Tommy King get together on the backstretch. Wolf goes in, King goes to pit road for crew attention and George Morales goes in. Bass holds the point on the restart followed by Wendel Bristol, Tim Shaffner, Brian Luloff, and Gary Foxworth. By lap 31, Foxworth is in the pits after a great run for the night.

Bass continues to lead the way with Dustin Skinner moving in fast to the second place spot but with Bass a good 10 car lengths ahead of him. Skinner puts the pedal down and tries to catch Bass but Bass is not to be caught. Bass holds on and takes the checkered for his first feature FASTRUCK WIN followed by Dustin Skinner, Jimmy Gill, Tim Shaffner, and Brian Luloff.

The Sportsman feature saw Tom Gamache on the pole but it was Mike Soukup who took the lead on the green. Lap 1 sees the yellow as Ken Lewton, Earl Beckner, and Randy Jones all visit the turns 3 and 4 wall with Bruce McGonigal spinning down the frontstretch. Jones is able to drive his car into the pits but Lewton and Beckner are towed in. Soukup holds the point on the restart followed by Peludat, Donny Williams, John Nusbaum and Dale Clouser. Peludat puts the pressure on Soukup and takes over the lead. Williams passes Soukup taking over second with Soukup in third. By lap 5, Williams has the point followed by Peludat, Soukup, Clouser and Nusbaum.

Clouser passes Peludat and takes over second and the rain drops begin to fall. The race has to be red flagged and with 9 laps in, Donny Williams is given the checkered followed by Dale Clouser, Chris Peludat, Mike Soukup, and John Nusbaum.

The Mini Stock and Strictly Stock features were rained out. Strictly Stocks will run July 10 for double features with the Mini Stocks running double features on July 17 with the first feature "double" points.
