IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
May 26, 2004
Goolsby gets Win in Bronson Modifieds.
by Rick Warren

Summer is upon us in North Central Fl. With the change in climate, the temperatures are rising, and the racing competition is getting hotter as well. The fans were not disappointed as a great night of racing took place, with a lot of excitement an surprises.

The Race Cars of Yesterday were on hand to provide some good racing and some great memories for a lot of fans. Rick Botts was the man, and put on quite a show as he wheeled the black #3nh to victory lane.

The Open Wheel Modified Feature race was full of surprises as the race unfolded. The Maguire racing team, of Rick Maguire and Larry Goolsby switched cars during the week, hoping to give Goolsby a better shot at the points chase.

As the race started, Gene Owen took the early lead, and appeared to be headed to an easy win, while the race for second was unfolding behind him. After a hard battle, Goolsby managed to get by Chip Owen and move into second place, and take up the chase to catch Gene Owen. It looked like Owen would maintain his lead, when Greg Owen spun in turn 4, bringing out the caution flag, and allowing the field to close in on Owens bumper.

When the race restarted, Owen was able to hold off the charge of Goolsby, and take the checkered flag. As it turned out, however, the engine in the #11 car of Owen was protested. After inspection, it was determined that the engine in the #11 car did not conform to specified rules, and Owen was disqualified, giving the win to Goolsby.

The figure 8 feature was a wild affair, as was expected. Ronnie Schreifels took the early lead, and was running for all he was worth, as Robbie Powell was coming up thru the pack, looking for the lead. After a brief caution period that allowed the field to close up.
After the restart, Powell was able to catch Schreifels, and the two drivers began to battle for the lead. Schreifels and Powell exchanged wheel marks, and several coats of paint before Powell was able to move past Schreifels for the lead.

As Powell began to attempt to open a lead, he suddenly slowed with a suspension problem on the right rear. Schreifels blasted by to retake the lead, and went on to claim the win. Dwayne Fults followed in second, with Ronnie Powell in third.

In Pure Stock Action, Joey Hunt made it 2 in a row, as he held off several challenges from different drivers, as he held on for the win. Second went to Mike Baker, with Arnold Hughes in third.

Clint Foley returned to winning form in the Mini Stock Division, as Foley and Ronnie Hicks got out front and were opening a comfortable lead on the pack. Hicks had engine problems on lap 11 and was forced to drop out of the race. Foley sailed to the checkered flag un challenged, followed by Josh Robertson and Billy Smith.

Robbie Cooper made it 2 in a row also, as he claimed the win in Sportsman action. Scott Wilkerson was second.

V8 Bomber action had Larry Welters Jr, Kevin Hodge and Randy ONeal all battling for the lead. As the 3 cars exited turn 4, Welters nudged Hodge out of the groove, and drove by for the lead, with ONeal right on his bumper.

As the cars entered turn 1, Hodge made contact with ONeal, causing a spin and bringing out the caution. With Hodge and O Neal both restarting t the end of the lead lap, Welters went on to win with no serious challenge. Second went to Michael Holbrook, With Hodge and ONeal making a fast charge thru the pack to take third and fourth.
