Soukup Takes FIRST Feature Win in Sportsman at NSS
|
by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (May 22, 2004) Plenty of action filled the warm night air at New Smyrna Speedway as Wayne Anderson took his second win in a row in the Pete Orr Memorial Orange Blossom 125. Four FASCAR divisions supported the 125 lap race, the Sportsman, Mini Stocks, Super Stocks and Strictly Stocks. Super Stocks saw Josh Wronkowski and Jeff Colburn take their heat wins. Josh Wronkowski had the pole for their 15 lap feature and quickly jumped to the lead on the green followed by Jeff Colburn, Jack Lenzen, John Castro, and Barry Parks. Colburn passes Wronkowski on lap 2 for the lead with Lenzen following thru for second and Wronkowski going to third. Just as Colburn takes the lead, smoke comes out of the #3 Super Stock and Colburn is done for the night going into the pits. The yellow comes out to check the track for any oil. Lenzen takes the point on the restart followed by Ron Whaley, Castro, Wronkowski, and Mike Soukup. With no more cautions, it is Lenzen and Whaley going for the lead with Whaley taking the number one spot by lap 10. Whaley takes the checkered followed by Jack Lenzen, John Castro, Josh Wronkowski, and Mike Soukup. Three Florida Mini Stock Challenge drivers visited New Smyrna Saturday night adding more fun to this division. Ronnie Larson, Ashley Larson and Marty Neikens. Brian Bellaw had the pole for the Mini Stock 15 lap feature but had problems on the start as Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus jumped to the lead on the green followed by Ron Dubeau, Bellaw, Ronnie Larson, and Marty Neikens. With no cautions, Bellaw was able to pass Dubeau taking over second but was unable to catch Vulpius for the lead. Vulpius takes the checkered followed by Brian Bellaw, Ron Dubeau, Ronnie Larson and Marty Neikens. Brian Bellaw took the heat win. Pete Close, Jr. visited New Smyrna for the Sportsman division but blew his engine in the heat race taking him out of the feature. Cory Kaiser had the pole for the Sportsman 15 lap feature but before a lap was down, the field saw a yellow for Ed Kennedy who spun in turn 2. The field was realigned for a complete restart with Kaiser taking the lead followed by Chris Peludat, Mike Soukup, Paul Hudson and Donny Williams. Ken Lewton was held for a lap on pit road for rough driving and joined the race on lap 2. Randy Jones, who moved from Super Stock to Sportsman, had problems on the start but was able to continue racing. By lap 2, Soukup passed Kaiser taking over the lead followed by Kaiser, Peludat, Williams, and Hudson. By lap 6, Peludat had taken over second with Williams in third and Kaiser settling in fourth with Hudson in fifth. Lap 8, Jones spins in turns 3 and 4 hitting the rear-end in the wall bringing out the yellow. Jones is able to continue but now has a little higher spoiler on his rear deck. Soukup holds the point on the restart followed by Peludat, Williams, Kaiser and Hudson. By lap 10, Williams has passed Peludat taking over second with Peludat in third. Lap 11 sees a rare thing, Williams brings out the yellow for a spin in turns 1 and 2. Williams is sent to the rear for the restart. On the restart, Jones gets squirelly in turns 3 and 4 as Williams slightly gets into Jones with nowhere to go. Jones is fine but retires to the pits. Soukup holds the point for the restart followed by Peludat, Kaiser, Williams, and Hudson. Williams passes Kaiser for third as Mike Soukup takes the checkered for his first feature win in the Sportsman division. Following Soukup to the checkered was Chris Peludat, Donny Williams, Cory Kaiser and Paul Hudson. Donny Williams took the heat win. Strictly Stocks saw no yellows for their 12 lap event as Derek Slade had the pole but Bruce McGonigal Jr. took the point on the green. Slade passes McGonigal and retakes the lead followed by McGonigal, Richie Laszlo, Jeremy Hovencamp, and Mike Wofford. Laszlo, who races at Orlando SpeedWorld every Friday night, passes Slade and takes the point and holds it for the checkered. Laszlo takes his second win at New Smyrna Speedway followed by Derek Slade, Chris Guidry, Bruce McGonigal Jr, and Matt Crews. Bruce McGonigal Jr. took the heat win.
