'Sticks' Holds Off 'Superman' For Mopar Sprint Win
|
by Bill Green
Tampa, FL. (Mar.27th, 2004) Old Time Sprints reminded the crowd about racing in days gone by. While the rest of the Saturday night regulars remind everyone of the here and now! The 360 cubic inch winded sprints are always a great show. But when you add 5 new names to 2004 runners listing, bring two veteran drivers back to the clay-by-the-bay, in Gene Lasker and Bubba The Love Sponge, you've got a fantastic night in store.
Street Stocks started the night off with Tony Jackson winning heat-1 and Rob Hall taking Heat-2. Then the problems began in the feature, causing the checkered to fly on lap 6. Winning the time-shortened race was asphalt-convert Bob Hall, second went to Chad Smith doing a great job of driving an ill handling #007, with Danny Paris third, Thomas White fourth and The Cornel Austin Sanders fifth.
Limited Late Models warmed up for their Florida Electric sponsored Twin-15s next week by bring out 23-LLMs for tonights action. Heat-1 went to the 2003 LLM Champion, William Hampton, with 2nd place in 2003 points Forest Gough winning Heat-2. Feature winner Forest Gough would hold off William Hampton for the win, with Hampton going off course in turn four on the final lap and falling to fifth. Second was Jason Bronson, third would go to Pete Grantham and forth to J. R. Prather, Jr.
Late Models saw Jackie Nosbisch, Jr. take their 12-car heat. But it was Devin Dixon using the front row start to survive several restarts for the trip to Victory Lane. Second went to David Schmauss, with Bobby Alexander, Sr. third, Jackie Nosbisch, Jr. fourth and Trevor Merrell fifth.
Winged 60 Sprints saw Team Hogan back in action with the legendary Florida driver Gene Lasker bring the familure #02 across for the Heat-1 win. Heat-2 went to the young gun Danny Martin, Jr. Feature pole sitter Gene Lasker would dominate the early laps, but a lap-20 caution for debris would see Lasker spin to a stop on the back stretch as lap traffic slowed in front of him.
He'd fall to the back of the lead-lap cars to seventh for the restart. Meanwhile up front the Shaw chassis would take up the challenge as Sticks Greg Leonard and Superman Sport Allen would put on a show for the fans. Leonard and Allen were bumper-to-bumper for the final 5 circuits and 3 restarts. Leonard would hold off several attempts by Allen to get under him, but the #88 would settle for second. Third went to Brian Maddox, fourth to Michael Smith and fifth to Daryl Smith.
Mini-Stocks would put on a show early, as the Heat winners would work hard for the victories. Heat-1 went to Jim Courson and Heat 2 to Jimmy Waldrop. The action wouldnt change in the feature with Scotty Williams taking another well-deserved win with a late race pass. Chad Rose came home second, Josh Peacock third, Ryan Mitchell fourth and Jim Courson rounding out the top-5.
Old Time Sprints brought 5 of the legendary car to the track for an exhibition race won (unofficially) by the orange #22 of Chuck Pritcher, but battling hard was the black #7 of Jay Yanke finishing second.
Next week we have the Florida Electric Twin-15 Limited Late Model features, along with Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks and Mini-Stocks. No Limited Sprints next week, but there is Friday Night Go-Karts Under-The-Lights. EAST BAY RACEWAY PARK WINNERS 03/23/27/2004
