Robbie Yoakam on his way to Another Mini Stock Challenge Crown
by Larry MacMillan

Forty four Mini Stocks towed from all parts of Florida to kick off the third year of the Mini Stock Challenge Series at Citrus County Speedway Saturday night.

Robbie Storer locked in fast qualifying time of 14:895 seconds on the 3/8ths mile oval followed by Robbie Yoakam at a 14:932 on his home race track. Both drivers elected to start at the rear of the 30 car field in an attempt to run for the

The B Main was anything but pretty with multiple caution flags mostly to wrecks that eliminated ten of the 20 starters. The checkered flag came out after only 7 laps were completed.

Ashley Larson was trying to protect his lead when the three early leaders took each other out in lap six. On three attempts to restart the race Alan Buker inherited the win as the race was called complete due to time restrictions and multiple caution flags.

When the green dropped for the main Lee Davis came off the pole and set the pace for the entire 50 laps while multiple battles for position went on behind him. Meanwhile, Robbie Yoakam proceeded to pick his way through heavy traffic moving to fifth by lap 22. R

obbie Storer trailed by three or four car lengths until the 22nd lap when he got caught up in a battle for eighth, taking him out of contention. On the restart, Yoakam picked off Rick Sirmons, Dustin DesChamps, and Chris Hooker, chasing Davis to the checkered flag to finish second. In post race technical inspection

The new Southern Sportsman series featured 19 cars in their debut in Florida. Mulberrys Aaron Williamson proved to be the car to beat qualifying with a 14.832 second run. Wesley Bass won the pole for the start of their 50 lap main event.

Moving from 13th to the point when the checkers flew gave Aaron Williamson the hard charger award as well as the first win purse for the series over runner up Frank Buchanan who finished where he started, in second. David Williamson held out for third from his fifth starting spot followed by sixth starter Scott Holly and Pete Close Jr. who finished fifth. <

A third 50 lap race featured the local Hobby Stock division. Bobby Taylor was fast qualifier and started tenth after the ten car inversion on the pill draw.

Dale Catrett won the pole and was one of the first cars eliminated after a crash three laps into the main event. Seventh starter David Chastain picked up the lead in lap three and held off the 22 starters for the win followed by Bobby Taylor who made numerous attempts to pass but just didnt have quite enough for him at the finish holding out for second when the checkers flew. Doug Webster jockeyed with Taylor in the race for second settling f

Another post tech inspection changed the finishing order in the Thunder Stock 20 lap feature. Twenty eight cars took the green flag after three early heat races and pole sitter Jared Kessler swapped the lead several times with outside pole sitter Steven Steindurf before Steindurf took control of the race right down to the checkered flag.

Kessler came up with the win after Steindurf was disqualified in post technical inspection. Defending champion Pat Veltman had to settle for a second place finish over Glen Colyer Sr., Rick Badessa and Jerry Hoover. Heat winners were Jared Kessler, John Sullivan and Rick Badessa.

Neal Durbin was top shoe in the qualifying heat race for the 4 Cylinder Bombers but had to settle for second behind Rick Fort in the 20 lap feature. Joey Durbin, Justin Durbin and John DeGeorge balanced out the top five over the 8 car field.

Next Saturday night the UPM Modified Special and Figure 8s will highlight a full race card. Super Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers will also run in heat and feature action in the 7 division race card.
