Anderson and Fritts tied as Night 9 Approaches
|
by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (February 14, 2004) With only one night left in the World Series, points are very tight in all four divisions. As the tension heats up, the drivers and crews are bone tired but ready to see one more night. Jr Hanley had the pole for the Super Late Model feature and took the lead on the green followed by Ryan Matthews, Mike Fritts, Justin Drawdy, and Boris Jurkovic. By lap 3, Jurkovic finds himself going door-to-door with fellow ASA competitor Kevin Cywinski for fifth. Cywinski proves he is the stronger car and takes over the spot as Ryan Matthews slips back to fourth. Lap 5 sees the yellow for Dexter Bean who has problems on the backstretch. At the same time, Jay Middleton and David Rogers get together spinning out with both going back to the rear of the field. On the restart, Hanley holds the point followed by Fritts, Drawdy, Matthews and Cywinski. Cywinski puts the muscle on Matthews and takes over fourth with Matthews sliding to fifth. Sammy Sanders brings out the yellow on lap 7 when he loses his motor. The track is cleaned and the race goes back green with Hanley, Fritts, Drawdy, Cywinski, and Wayne Anderson in the top five. Lap 12 sees the yellow again for Landon Cassill who hits the backstretch wall. On the restart, Fritts outruns Hanley taking over the number one spot as Hanley falls to second. Drawdy is all over the back of Hanley as he tries to take over second. Drawdy and Hanley touch sending Hanley into a spin and Drawdy to the rear of the field. Fritts holds the point on the restart followed by Anderson, Cywinski, Jurkovic and Eddie Van Meter. Colin White brings out the caution as he spins on the backstretch. On the restart, Anderson is able to move pass Fritts and take over first. Anderson takes the checkered followed by Fritts, Cywinski, Jurkovic, and Louie Mechalides. Donny Lia had the pole for the Richie Evans Memorial and quickly took the lead with Eric Beers, Charlie Pasteryak, Bo Gunning and Ed Flemke Jr in the top five. On lap 1, Justin Gaydosh spins on the backstretch bringing out the yellow. The race restarts on lap 7 with Lia in front. Lap 9 saw the red flag come out for a pile-up in turns 3 and 4 involving George Boch, Mike Fitch, Johney Bush, Justin Gaydosh, John Blewitt, Jim Storace and Andy Seuss. The track was cleared and cleaned and the race resumed on lap 15 with Lia on the point. Lia finds Eric Beers in his rear view mirror and looking for the point. Beers is strong and by lap 21, Beers has become the new leader with Bo Gunning, Lia, Flemke, and Bertuccio in the top five. By lap 24 it is Beers, Gunning, Flemke, Lia and Bertuccio. Lap 36 Gunning finds Flemke right on his rear. Gunning holds on until lap 50 when Flemke takes over second and Gunning slides backwards as Bertuccio comes in third, Christopher fourth, and Hossfield fifth. Hossfield and Christopher are now going door-to-door as Hossfield passes Christopher and takes over fifth as Christopher slides to sixth. Now it is Beers, Flemke, Bertuccio, Hossfield and Christopher in the top five. Lap 67 John White brings out the yellow as he spins on the frontstretch with the leaders coming in for a quick pit stop. When the race goes back green, it is John Blewitt in the lead over George Kent, Buck Catalono, Ed Flemke, and Bo Gunning. Gunning finds his hands full again with Christopher as they fight for fifth. Lap 78, Gunning brings out the yellow as he spins on the frontstretch . The race restarts on lap 81 with Blewitt, Kent, Flemke, Catalono, and Christopher in the top five. Lap 83 sees the yellow for debris on the track. Lap 89 sees Christopher touch Flemke spinning him out on the frontstretch while running third. Flemke feels that he has had enough and goes around and spins Christopher out on the back stretch while under caution. Flemke is retired to the pits and Christopher continues but not happy. The race goes back green on lap 90 with Blewitt in the lead over Kent, Beers, Bertuccio, and Hossfield. Blewitt takes the checkered for his first win of the World Series in 2004 and the Richie Evans Memorial. Following Blewitt across the checkered was George Kent, Eric Beers, JR Bertuccio, and Chuck Hossfield. FASTRUCKS saw Marty Wolf on the pole for their 50 lap feature. Wolf took the lead on the green followed by Sean Bass, Jimmy Gill, James Glover, and Todd Bradberry. Gill is able to pass Wolf taking over the lead with Wolf sliding to third and Marty Zehr coming into fifth. Lap 22 the yellow comes out for Anthony Barreca who has an engine let go. The race goes back green with Gill on the point. Gill is able to maintain the lead and take the checkered followed by Sean Bass, Marty Wolf, James Glover and Marty Zehr. Tim Russell had the pole for the Late Model feature and quickly took the point on the green followed by Jason Boyd, Doug Samion, Rich Clouser and Shaun McWhirter. McWhirter passes Clouser and takes over fourth with Clouser sliding to fifth. Lap 6 McWhirter and Samion get together with Samion hitting the turn 2 wall hard. The race goes back green with Jason Boyd taking over the lead on the green followed by Russell, Clouser, Burkhalter and Dave Wagner.. On lap 7, Cynthia Strahley and Jim Mattheus bring out the yellow as they make slight contact and Mattheus spinning. Both join the field in the rear. Two laps later, lap 9, Mattheus hits the turn 3 wall ending his run for the night. The race goes back green with Boyd on the point. Boyd holds strong even though Russell is hard on his tail and takes the checkered followed by Tim Russell, Rich Clouser, Chuck Burkhalter, and Dave Wagner. Jerry Symons had the pole for the FL/IMCA feature race but it was Brad May who took the point and the win. Following May on the green was Lee Collins, Jerry Symons, Jerry Artuso, and John White. The yellow comes out for an exhaust pipe on the track and the race goes back green with May as the leader. On the restart, Artuso gets into the back of John White causing a major spin in turns 1 and 2. Involved in the pile was Dennis Pierce, Alan Bruns, Chad Pierce, and Russell Perdue. Artuso is taken to the pits on a hook and done for the night. Lap 8 Shaun Stroble and Billy Johanneck get together with Stroble spinning. The race goes back green with May on the point. Collins gets right on the tail of May but cannot pass. Even though a few more cautions were thrown, May holds strong and takes the checkered followed by Lee Collins, Jerry Symons, David Stacy, and Rodney Brooks. Joe Adams had the pole for the Sportsman feature and took the lead on the green followed by Dale Clouser, Paul Colgan, Earl Beckner, and David Myers. Lap 6 Colgan brings out the yellow as he spins at the bottom of turns 1 and 2. Lap 7 Adams spins on the frontstretch bringing out the caution. On the restart, Clouser now finds himself once again on the point. Clouser holds strong and takes his third win for the three nights of Sportsman racing followed by Earl Beckner, Paul Colgan, David Myers, and Ken Lawton.
