Hanley Takes Another Win on Night 4 at New Smyrna
by Jane Smith

Samsula, Fla. (February 10, 2004) The weather was much better and not as cold as Sunday night. Fans came out to see the TBARA Winged Sprints as they took their last ride around New Smyrna concluding their two day visit during the World Series. Forty one Super Late Models took time trails with Jr. Hanley topping the list. Junior pulled a 1 pill and started on the pole. Two consi races were run due to the number of cars with Dexter Bean, Bob Fox, Collin White, Boris Jurkovic, Robby Dean, Pete Shepherd Jr., Kiki Thomas and Donnie Varcoe racing their way into the main event.

Once again Jr. jumped to the lead on the green and never relinquished it. Following Jr. on the green was Justin Drawdy, Scott Hantz, Randy Gentry, and Dick Anderson. Donald Long found that his car was just not right and pulled out of the race on lap 9. By lap 10, Wayne Anderson had worked his way to fifth pushing B.J. McLeod to sixth as David Rogers fell into seventh. By lap 19, Scott Hantz moved into second with Justin Drawdy falling to third. Randy Gentry has to do alittle backing off as he gets very loose coming off 4 while running fourth.

Lap 20 sees Dick Anderson hit the turn 3 wall as it seems he has had a tire to go down.
Anderson is fine but done for then night. Hanley continues to lead the way for the rest of the race and takes the checkered followed by Wayne Anderson, Scott Hantz, Justin Drawdy, and Randy Gentry.

Joey Aguilar had the pole for the TBARA Winged Sprints feature and won from the pole. Before the first lap was down, Doug Heveron brought out the yellow as he stalled on the backstretch with mechanical problems. The race goes back to green with Aguilar leading the way.

As both Reutimann Sr. and Jr. are racing each other hard, Reutimann Jr gets spun around dusting turn 2 wall and is done for the night. The race goes back green with Aguilar, Hank Lower, David Slaviak, Shane Butler, and Mark Gimmler in the top five.

Aguilar hangs tough as Slaviak takes over second and aims for Aguilar but just cannot get the pass. Aguilar holds on and takes the checkered followed by David Slaviak, David Steele, Shane Butler, and Wayne Reutimann Sr.

Tom Root had the pole for the FL/IMCA Mod feature but it was Scott Millar who took the lead on the green. Following Millar was Lee Collins, Brad May, Jason Boyd, and Jerry Artuso. Alan Bruns brings out the yellow as his No. 4b slows on turn 4 and needs some help getting into the pits.

Millar holds the point on the restart followed by Lee Collins, Brad May, Jason Boyd, and Jerry Artuso. May and Boyd go side-by-side with Boyd taking over third and May going to fourth. Lap 8, Boyd gets the pedal down alittle too far and taps Collins sending them both back to the rear for the restart. Millar holds the point with May, Tank Tucker, Jerry Symons and Jerry Artuso in the top five.

Lap 20 sees heartbreak for the leader Millar as he has mechanical problems and must retire from the race turning the lead over to Brad May followed by Tank Tucker, Jerry Symons, Jerry Artuso, and Tom Root.

A caution comes out which allows Artuso to take over the lead on the green. Artuso holds strong with a hard-charing Jason Boyd on his tail and takes the checkered for his first win of the World Series. Following Artuso was Jason Boyd, Jerry Symons, Tank Tucker and ] Brad May.

Shaun McWhirter had the pole for the 50 lap Late Model race but it was Jason Boyd who took the lead on the green followed by Shaun McWhirter, Chuck Burkhalter, Jerry Artuso, and Joey Miller. Burkhalter is shuffled out of the top five as Tim Russell shows his power in fifth.

Lap 22 see the yellow come out. Boyd holds the point on the restart with McWhirter, Artuso, Russell and Doug Samion in the top five. On lap 26 the yellow comes out again for Mike Murphy, Doug Samion, Dave Wagner who get caught up in the fight between Russell and Artuso for third.

Boyd holds the restart with McWhirter, Joey Miller, Tim Russell and Chuck Burkhalter in the top five. Lap 29 sees Gary Vashe bring out the caution as he spins at the bottom of turns 1 and 2. On the restart, Boyd holds the point as Rich Clouser moves into fifth. By lap 33, Clouser has taken over fourth. Lap 34, Larry Osteen brings out the caution when he spins in turns 3 and 4.The race goes back green as Boyd leads the way.

Lap 47, Joey Miller hits the frontstretch wall hard but he is fine. On the restart, Larry Osteen spins and brings out the caution again. Boyd holds the point on the restart and takes the checkered followed by Shaun McWhirter, Chuck Burkhalter, Rich Clouser and Kirk Hooker.

Mini Stocks saw Dustin DesChamps win his first race of the 2004 World Series. Dustin had come close by not won yet. Give DesChamps a good run for his money was Scott Reeves who tried but could not catch DesChamps. Allie Owens sees her hopes come to a conclusion as her car shuts off. DesChamps takes the checkered followed by Scott Reeves, Ted Vulpius, Chase Goodson, Tracy Quellette, Larry Long, Rex Christensen, and Allie Owens.

STARRS ran for their first night with Steve Parker taking the win followed by Phil Barkins, Jeff Richardson, Ray Snodgrass, Dot Farnsworth, Charlie Lima, Ralph Farnsworth and Barry Roy.

Racing February 10 will be the Super Lates, Late Models, NASCAR Tour Type/SK Mods, FL/ IMCA Mods (50 laps), Mini Stock and STARRS. Racing begins at 7:30 p.m.
