IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
February 9, 2004
Night 3 sees Joey Miller in the Winner's Circle
by Jane Smith

Samsula, Fla. (February 9, 2004) Fans had to drink plenty of hot chocolate on Sunday night but it did not stop anyone from coming out for Night 3 of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. The Super Lates had the night off with the TBARA Winged Sprints coming in for a two day show.

Twenty seven Winged Sprints came to try their luck at the l/2 mile high banked New Smyrna. Winning the heat races were Doug Heveron, Joe Redman, and Joey Aguilar. On the pole for their feature event was Scott Adema but after two restarts it was Mark Gimmler who took the lead on the green. The race went red right off the bat as Wendy Mathis hits the turns 1 and 2 wall hurting her hand. Mathis was transported to the hospital with a possible broken thumb.

Gimmler holds the point on the restart but Joey Aguilar puts the heat on and passes Gimmler. On lap 9, Scott Adema brings out the yellow as he and Gary Gimmler get together on the backstretch causing the red flag to come out. Both drivers were fine but done for the night.

Aguilar holds the point on the restart but on lap 11 the yellow comes out for Aguilar who is leaking and sent to the pits giving Mark Gimmler back the lead. But it is Doug Hevron who takes the lead with a strong David Steele behind him. Hevron holds on and takes the checkered followed by David Steele, Dude Teate, Ray Bragg, and Wayne Reutimann Jr.

Late Model action saw Joey Miller lead from green to checkered. Only one caution was thrown for the entire feature which was great after all the cautions the night before. Following Miller to the checkered was Tim Russell, Rich Clouser, Doug Samion, and Jason Boyd. Monday night the Late Models will go for a 50 lap feature.

The NASCAR Tour Type/SK Mods saw Donny Lia on the pole for their feature event and winning from the pole. Lia looked to be a man on a mission as he lead the entire race. Following Lia to the checkered was J.R. Bertuicco, Eric Beers, George Kent, and Ted Christopher.

Mini Stocks saw Scott Reeves take his first win followed by Dustin DesChamps, Ted Vulpius, Adam Murray, and Rex Christensen.

Terry Mathis took all three night wins for the Team USA Pro Challenge drivers. Mathis proved that his No. 71 was set-up just right for New Smyrna. Following Mathis to the checkered was Brent McLain, Mark Dyer, Marty Arrender, and Nancy Hartwick.

Night 4 will see the Late Models go for 50 laps along with the Super Late Models, Fl/IMCA Modifieds, TBARA Winged Sprints, Mini Stock and STARRS. Racing starts at 7:30.
