Ivey Outguns Field in Bill Mishoe Memorial at Golden Isles Speedway

By Rick Anges

Action was fast and furious at Golden Isles Saturday night.

Brunswick, Ga. - The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series made its second trip to the one of the finest dirt tracks in to south Golden Isles Speedway. Thirty-Seven of the south’s Finest drivers were on hand for the nights racing event that was dedicated to one of Golden Isles favorite sons Bill Mishoe.

In a pre-race interview Virginia Mishoe brought back many memories of the late Bill Mishoe. As Bill’s yellow and red number 33 took a victory lap around the Georgia clay Virginia said it was Bill’s “need for Speed” that drove him to be the racer he was.

With eleven races in the books Johnny Collins came into the race with four wins and the points lead. Mark Whitener was coming off a dominating win at North Florida Speedway. Both drivers looked to be odds on favorite to win without previous GIS winner Ivedent Lloyd not on the roster for the race.

With the sun beating down and temperatures reaching the mid-90’s the Lloyds and their track crew had their hands full working the track and getting it ready for the nights racing. But once again they were on their game and gave the racers an action filled racetrack.

With a nearly full moon rising in the east qualifying began. Darrell Padgett was the second car on the track and found his groove around the 4/10-mile speedway registering a 16.831 second lap to take the Zeigler Racing Engines Fast Qualifier award. Second Fast went to Tyler Ivey 16.935 who was still looking for his first win after a disappointing fifteenth place finish at NFS. Third was Mark Whitener.

Shane Williams had a tough break during qualifying almost slamming into the backstretch barrier and almost flipping his car. Williams was the first winner for the UDLMCS at Ocala Speedway but his night was over at Golden Isles.

Four cars would move from each of the four Heat Races to the forty-lap A-Main event. Heat number one saw Tyler Ivey taking the win followed by fast qualifier Darrell Padgett taking second, third was Johnny Collins and the fourth transfer spot was Keith Nosbisch.

Heat number two was won by Jackie Nosbisch, Jeremy Faircloth was in the second spot, third at the line was Carlton Jackson and moving on to the Main in fourth Brandon Dewitt.

Brandon Cameron won heat number three, followed by Russell Brown Jr., John Kellum and Kent Corbin respectively

Whitener picked up where he left off winning the final heat race of the evening Jeff Henry finished in second, third across the stripe was Jason Fitzgerald and the final transfer spot went to J.O.Nobles.

Two B-Mains would move six more cars to the A-Main. “Showtime” Shan Smith held everyone off to take the checkers in the Tommy’s Towing B-Main race. Kyle Van Sickle was second with Adam Bedenbaugh third moving on. Southern Style Motorsports sponsored the final B-Main and it was Jordy Nipper taking the trophy home, Chuck Cumby and Johnny Allen also secured spots in the A-Main.

With the provisionals decided twenty-seven cars lined the front stretch for the 40 lap A-main. The winners of the heats were given the “Challenge” of going to the rear and if they could make it all the way back to the front and win could double the $3,000 winners share to $6,000. None of the top took the challenge and drew pills for the inversion.

“Magic Man” Mark Whitener drew the #1 pill putting him on the pole, Tyler Ivey drew outside front row. Jackie Nosbisch and Brandon Cameron would make up row two.

The green would drop and Ivey would use the outside line on Whitener to get around him and take the top spot. Whitener would stay close looking for a line to get around the previous weeks fast qualifier at North Florida Speedway. Before he knew though “the Magic Man” was feeling the heat from “the Locomotive” Johnny Collins who had made his way through traffic up to the third spot after starting in the tenth spot.

Whitener and Collins would put a show on for the fans of Golden Isles running side-by-side lap after lap swapping sheet metal as they battled for the second spot. They changed the position several times throughout the course of the race.

Up front Ivey was making his way through lapped traffic going three wide sometimes to get by the slower cars. Ivey was on a mission after the previous weeks disappointment. At North Florida Ivey had run hard with Collins for second and on a green white checker was looking for the lead coming out of four heading for the checkers and spun as he tried to go under Whitener. He would finish fifteenth after running towards the front all night.

This night would yield a different result as Ivey was able to stay out of trouble and drove a near flawless race to take his first win and become the sixth different winner for the UDLMCS in ’08. “This win is really good but I don’t think it can make for last week,” said Ivey.

Collins would take second for the second week in a row. Collins said, “Mark and I always race hard when we are together on the track”. Mark Whitener would come home third. Jackie Nosbisch had his best showing of the year with a solid fourth followed by his brother Keith Nosbisch in fifth.

The next event for the UDLMCS is East Bay Raceway Park on September 27. For more on the UNited Dirt Late Models visit the web site at its new address: www.uniteddirtlatemodels.com
