The Late Late Show at Golden Isles Well Worth the Wait

by Jack Smith

Jason Fitzgerald came up just short and took the RealRacinUSA.com Runner-Up Award

Though the afternoon rains backed up the program at Golden Isles Speedway Saturday night, fans were entertained by fifty-three dirt late model team as well as 65 racers from the local classes. Action was postponed until after 9:00 PM, when the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series qualifying got underway.

Fast time was set by Jason Fitzgerald, driving the Bobby Labonte Racing #7F. Fitzgerald, no stranger to Golden Isles, took home a 4th place finish in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series earlier this year.

Five heat races, three B mains and a last chance race, sponsored in part by Ray Miller of the National Late Model Series, set the stage for the 50 lap feature event, with a starting field of 30 cars. Scott Built Homes of Waycross, Frankie and Jackie Lloyd, Southern Style Motorsports of Jacksonville and Race Car Engineering all were involved in sponsoring the last chance race.

The race produced two red flags, one for the car on its roof in the early going. Steve Whitener's #11 race car made it all the way over in turn two, no drivers were injured.

By the half-way mark it was clear Ivedent Lloyd was in charge, though Fitzgerald, Michael Lloyd and Johnny Collins made it very interesting with hard racing in the last 20 laps.

Ivedent Lloyd took the checkered flag at 3:40 AM in front of 400-500 hard core fans of dirt late model racing.

Members of one of the teams was involved in a bad accident on the way home from the race. Stanton Mills, a limited Late model driver and owners of the Darrell Padgett UDLMCS team were involved. Barrett was released today from the hospital, all others involved are ok.

Full reports & photos to follow. Interviews from the race can be heard on RealRacinUSA.com's Inside Florida Racing Monday 7-9 PM
