DeWayne Dempsey Tops In SARA Modifieds

The weather threatened, the rains came, but undaunted by a little moisture, the fans and competitors out-lasted the rain, and the show went on.

The festivities were slightly delayed by the rain, but the racing this day was worth the wait. After qualifications were finished, driver introductions were done, and the die was rolled to determine how many rows would be inverted, Bronson’s own Gary Southard was on the pole, in his Southard Racing Machine and Performance #39.

The Green Flag waved for the 26 starters, and the race was on. Southard powered to the lead, with Dempsey, Monty Morgan, Wayne Jefferson, John Anderson and Larry Martin in close pursuit.

The fans were treated to some fast and furious racing, with several cautions for minor on-track incidents.

Southard continued to lead the way, with Dempsey and Martin dogging his every move, looking for a slip, looking for any opening to try to get past and take the lead. Lapped traffic proved to be tricky for all the leaders, and was almost the undoing of a few, as the racing quarters were tight, and passing was dicey. Attrition began to take it’s toll, as one by one , those chasing the leader began to encounter problems.

But as soon as one fell out or back, there were always many waiting for the opportunity to take a run at Southard and Dempsey. Finally on lap 83 Dempsey got the break he had been pushing for, when Southard slipped out of the groove going into turn three, and Dempsey was able to take the lead. As Southard got into the high groove, the door was shut by Wayne Jefferson and John Anderson to leave Southard out in the cold, in the high groove, and not a friend to be found.

As Southard tried to rejoin the battle, his racer developed problems, and after leading so much of the event, he was forced to retire from the event. Once Dempsey was out front, he had no easy task holding onto the lead. Jefferson and Anderson made several strong runs at him, but Dempsey managed to keep a firm grip on the lead, and bring his A-Tex Transmissions entry home with the win.

Finishing a strong second was Wayne Jefferson with John Anderson finishing third.

The race had a lot at stake for many of the SARA regulars. This race would decide the outcome of their season points standings, and many could make or break their point standings with this race. Dwayne Dempsey showed his professionalism by concentrating on the task at hand, and by winning the race, also wrapping up his Third SARA Championship, and his second in a row.

The folks at Bronson Motor Speedway wish to send our Congratulations to Dwayne Dempsey, on his Great performance today, and his outstanding season. Way to Go, Dwayne! We also want to thank all the crew with SARA for the effort and great show they put on today. We look forward to their visits to BMS next year!

In Pure Stock Action, a large field of cars raced hard and heavy, and put on a great show. This year’s point champion, John “Hammerhead” Hughes, ran a fine race, and won the last one of the season in fine fashion.

As the racing season ends for this year at BMS , Mike and Jane Cope and all the Staff at Bronson, would like to thank everyone for their support this year. It has been a good year at BMS, and we are looking forward to an even bigger and better Season next year.
