Welters Wins Pure Stock 50 Lapper at Bronson

by Rick Warren

Fall was in the air Saturday night, with clear skies
and temps in the high 40's, it was excellent racing
weather. The turn out was good for the Pure Stock
50 Lapper presented by Smirnoff Ice! The warm-ups
were thru, motors were tuned, tires were checked.
It was time to step up and qualify. Several drivers
had already made comment to the fact that the pure
sotcks don't usually have to qualify, and this was a
different experience for them. And because this was
out of the ordinary for them, it made these guys
want to gie 110% in their qualifying attempts. The
fans were not disappointed, as the driers each
attempted to be the quickest one thru the lights.
When it was all done, John "Hammerhead" Hughes had
made the fastest trip (15.196 sec.) around this
l/3 mile oval. Second fast was Krystal Batson,
followed by Wesley Keller, Doug Webster, and Gary
Southard. By virtue of his drawing of a seven from
the dreaded "pill bag", Hughes inverted the first 4
rows for the feature race.

When the feature race was lined up, it had Larry
Welters sitting on the pole position with the #16
car of Bob Johnson on the outside. When the green
flag was waved to start the race, it was tight
racing, and no friends to be found. Larry Welters
led the field, but had all he could do to keep out
front. He was followed closely by B. Johnson, Doug
Webster, Hammerhead Hughes, J. Holbrook, and Krystal
Batson. The racing stayed bumper to bumper, and door
to door, until lap 19, when Krystal Batson's #4 car
lost a right front, and had hard contact with the
front straight wall. Later in the race, another
caution was brought out when Wesley Keller and
Mike Baker tangled on the front stretch. The contact
put both cars out of the race, and oiled the bottom
groove of the race track. After the cleanup was
complete, and racing resumed, it was once again Larry
Welters holding off all attempts to take the lead.
Some serious jockeying for track position was going
on behind the leader, and proided the fans with some
great racing. When the checkered flag was shown,
Welters had managed to maintain his hold on the #1
spot, and came home with a well earned win. Close
behind was B. Johnson, Hughes, and Webster.

In the Modified division, a good field of cars was in
attendance, most trying to prepare set-ups for next
weeks SARA/Bo Williams 100 lap modified race. The 30
lap feature saw some hard racing, with some bumping
and grinding along the way. If this was any indication
of the racing to come this Saturday, we are in for a
treat. Monticello's Monty Morgan showed that he has
been paying attention this year, and has learned how
to get his racer right for this track. He should be
tough next week. He brought his race car home first
when the checkered flag fell, making it two in a row
for the Morgans Garage/Amsoil machine, and his third
feature win this year. Gary Southard ran second
followed by David Baxley.
FINAL ORDER 30 Laps

2. #38 Gary Southard

The V-8 bombers proed to be a family affair as Katie
Welters held off the determined charge of her father-
in-law and brother-in-law and by the way, if her last
name looks familiar, go back to the beginning of this
