Conrad, Stalnaker and Gainey Take Checkers at Lake City Speedway

By Shirley Lynch

With the Triple Crown 300 only one week away, all divisions saw increased car counts and many visiting drivers in the pits, all intent on dialing in their cars before the $3,000 races on October 26th.

The Street Stock Division started off the night with three heat races to accommodate the large field of 28 cars. Heat race 1 was won by #7 Tim Conrad, followed by #79 Duane Teckenbrock and #29 Marvin Hassell. Jason Garver #27 took the checkers for heat race 2 with the #48 of Shane Taylor finishing 2nd and #27X Jeff Hunter taking 3rd. Ronald Broughton, driving the 8B took the win on heat race 3 with the #69 of David Tyrrell crossing 2nd and the #77 of Brad Fiene coming across 3rd.

As the Street Stocks lined up for their Feature Race, you had to wonder what a 28 car field on a full moon night was going to do and it only took one lap to realize that these drivers were going to play rough. The #7 of Tim Conrad jumped out front followed by #27 Jason Garver, but Garver ran out of luck on lap 5 and retired to the pits. The #38 of Randy Merwin fought his way from 11th place starting position to drop in behind Conrad on lap 7. #44 Dean Sands also drove a good race as he moved up from 13th starting position to take the third place spot. Numerous cautions plagued the race as every driver seemed too impatient to let things happen, instead of trying to make them happen and the time limit was called after 13 laps of battle. Finishing order was #7 Tim Conrad taking the win with #38 Randy Merwin in 2nd, #44 Dean Sands finishing 3rd, #8X of Tal Etheredge traveling down from Georgia to cross 4th and #84 of Skip Haskett finishing 5th.

The Ministock Division ran two heat races with the #59 of Bill Stalnaker winning heat race 1, followed by the #38 of Joey Durbin and the #1 of Rocky Bowden. Heat race 2 was won by Jeff Stalnaker, Sr. The #10 driven by visiting driver, Rick Sirmans crossed in 2nd and the #31 of Barry Knight took 3rd.

As the green flag dropped on the Ministock Feature, Jeff Stalnaker, Sr. took the lead and #10 Rick Sirmans got an excellent jump to drop into 2nd, followed by #59 Bill Stalnaker. Joey Durbin made a pass on Bill Stalnaker on lap 5 to take over 3rd. As the #10 retired with mechanical problems, Bill Stalnaker returned the favor to Durbin, once again taking over 2nd. Finishing order was #77 Jeff Stalnaker, Sr., followed by #59 Bill Stalnaker, #38 Joey Durbin taking 3rd, #33 Neal Durbin crossing 4th and #31 Barry Knight finishing 5th.

The Pure Stock Division ran three fast heat races with competition fierce but clean. Heat race 1 was won by the #0 of Nevin Gainey and the #17 of Gene O'Steen crossed 2nd and #34 of Wesley Keller finished 3rd. The #20 car, driven by Travis Williams took the checkers on heat race 2 followed by #1 of Jerry Fortner and the #31 of Trisha Taylor taking 3rd.

Whether it was the full moon rising or goblins at work the Pure Stock Feature race suffered from numerous wrecks and cautions, lots of flaring tempers and some hard charging racing. As the time limit was called the finishing order was #0 Nevin Gainey on top with the #97 of Joey Rolling in 2nd, the #34 of Wesley Keller folling close behind to take 3rd, the #17 of Gene O'Steen finishing 4th and the #151 of Chip Owen taking 5th place honors.

Please join us at Lake City Speedway next weekend for the Triple Crown 300, as drivers from Florida, Georgia and Alabama go head to head for 100 laps and the chance to win $3,000 in the Street Stock, Pure Stock and Ministock Divisions. Be sure to come early and watch the drivers practice until 3:00 p.m., with qualifying for all at 4:00 p.m. and racing at 7:00 p.m.

Don't miss the $3,000 to win 75 lap Super Late Model Race on November 16th as well as Street Stock, Pure Stock and Ministock divisions.
