Grossenbacher Logs First L.M. Win at Citrus

by Larry MacMillan

Inverness, Fla 10/19/02 - Scott Grossenbacher brought a
record of three top five, four top ten finsihes and a
heat win into this week's main event and drew a sixth
starting position for the 30 lap feature race on auto-
graph night at Citrus County Speedway. With fourteen
competitors it turned out in his favor with a caution
flag coming out in the first lap for the complete
restart, that saw some strange things happen in the non
stop action from the drop of the green flag. Dale
Sanders had a drag race with runner up in the point
race Jim Smith to turn one and Sith won that. Dale got
hung out to dry with the rest of the field taking the
low groove. Billy Bechtelheimer was the next car to fall
off the pace in the run for the lead. Robbie Yoakam
and Scott Grossenbacher were chasing Jim Smith for the
point when Smith lost power on the front chute going
into the final 10 laps when Grossenbacher put Robbie
behind him and that's what put Scott in the win column
for the first time this season. Yoakam got his second
ride in the former Ricky Carlton racecar and finished
a solid second just ahead of young fourteen-year-old
Brock Olgesby. Tom Haselmayer moved from 10th to finish
fourth over 11th starter Raymond Lovelady. Heat wins
went to Haselmayer and Oglesby.

Point leader Mike Veltman added his ninth win to his 2002
resume over an eleven car field from his 10th starting
spot and powered his way to the front in lap 12 of the 20
lap main event. The race for second kept the crowd on the
edge of their seat with Phillip Rook substituting for Mark
Dominique, Chris Cross and Buddy Kessler battling for
second. When the checkers flew Rook outran Cross to the
flag but Chris weighed in light giving third place to
Buddy Kessler, fourth to pole sitter Joe Rankin and last
week's winner J.D. Goff moving up to fifth. Rankin and
Kessler took the heat wins.

Another short field of Street Stocks lined up for their 20
lap feature but kept the race for the top ten the closest
of all the divisions. Mike Bell muscled his way from his
tenth starting spot right into the winner's circle and up
to the top spot in the point's ladder. Kathy Ray continues
to show horsepower and driving ability holding off Point
leader Travis Nichols for a second place finish. Danny
Cretty logged his 12th top five finish with a fourth
place finish. Ernie Reed held out for a fifth place
finish. Kathy Ray and Danny Cretty logged heat wins.

Mini Stock winner Ray Miller logged his first win but not
without a tear down in Tech which showed him to be legal
for his first win at Citrus County Speedway. Robbie
Yoakam continues to be the dominant force in the Mini
Stock division scoring ten wins and eleven top five
finishes with just four more weeks left in the season.
Phillip Joyner, Jr. came off a win a week ago to hold
out for a third place finish after starting sixteenth.
Apparent fourth place finisher Jay McKenzie refused to
tear down and was D.Q.'d moving pole sitter Jimmy
Bartley up to fourth just ahead of point runner up Rob
Wheatley. Bartley and Yoakam took the heat wins.

Rookie Daniel Webster is putting some muscle in his
Rookie of the Year endeavor with his second win coming
over a 23-car field. He outran point leader Richie
Smith who was looking for his 12th win of the season for
the final five laps. Dean Lawyer moved from his 20th
starting spot to out run Roy Perkins in the run for
fourth. Dustin Aaron challenged for the lead early in
the race from his sixth starting spot but had to settle
for a fifth place finish after. Heat winners were Curtis
Youmans and Richie Smith.

Thunder Stocks hed the shortest field in weeks and only
required two heats and one feature run. Lee Keller
locked in his third feature win from his eleventh start-
ing spot. Shawn Conner came out of 12th to go into the
lead and the half way point of the race but slipped back
to second just ahead of Robin Bauer who came from
thirteenth to out run 20th starter Stuart Madison for the
spot. Robert Jordan salvaged a fifth place finish from
his 18th starting position in their 20 lap main event.
Heat wins went to Keller and Bobby Taylor who had his
first DNF after winning four out of five of his first
races.

Next Saturday night will see seven divisions in head and
feature action to include the Figure 8's coming out for
another appearance. Plus the drivers will have their
annual Trick or Treat for the kids during intermission.
