David Lashley Dominates Street Stocks at Lake City

By Shirley Lynch

The Street Stock Division proved they were ready to rumble when the first heat race took three attempts to make the first lap happen. The #00 of David Lashley took the lead for the win with the #44 of Dean Sands followed closely for 2nd and the #8 of Debbie Shepard finished 3rd. In the 2nd heat race, Shane Taylor, driving the #3 car lead flag to flag to capture the win with the #38 of Randy Merwin finishing 2nd and the #20 of Travis Williams crossing 3rd.

As the green flagged waved on the Street Stock Feature, Lashley, Taylor, Sands and Merwin looked like a freight train as they rubbed and raced for the first three laps. As they accelerated down the front stretch for their fourth lap, the accelerator on the #3 car hung wide open and launched Shane Taylor off the turn one corner and airborne over the dirt embankement. The race was redflagged and several tense minutes passed as Fire/Rescue personnel assessed Taylor's condition and reported that he was OK.

As the race resumed, the #00 of David Lashley, the #44 of Dean Sands and the #38 of Randy Merwin once again jumped out front. The #6X of Kenny Abney made a serious challenge but was unable to overtake the #44 of Sands. Randy Merwin made an outside pass work against Sands to take over 2nd on lap 9 and the race finished with #00 of David Lashley taking the checkers, #38 of Randy Merwin in 2nd, #44 of Dean Sands crossing 3rd, #6X of Kenny Abney finishing 4th and the #79 of Duane Teckenbrock coming from 9th to take 5th place honors.

The Late Model Sportsman Division ran a feature only with the #27 of Rance Phillips moving out front on the start and opening up as much as a straightaway lead over the field. The #55 of Wayne Stevens got close, but could never put together enough horsepower or traction to quite overtake Phillips. Finishing order for the LM Sportsman Feature was #27 of Rance Phillips taking the win, the #55 of Wayne Stevens finishing 2nd, #83 of Kelly Philman crossing 3rd and the #79 of Jason Davis finishing 4th. Bad luck award of the night for this division goes to #86 of Wilson Griffis who battled with a tractor tire and lost, retiring from the program prior to the feature action.

The Modified Division ran a 5 lap Dash for Cash, with Kyle Owen in the F1 taking the win and the #M4 of Leon Allgyer following close behind.

The Florida Open Wheel Lites traveled over to enjoy some side by side racing and the first heat race was won by the #66 Chris Harrison with #07 Jim Biglin taking 2nd and the #11 of Jim Harrison crossing 3rd. The second heat race was won by #01 of Ron Towles and #04 Rick Lundeen finished 2nd and #69 Kevin Baxter took 3rd.

As the Open Wheel Lite Feature got underway, the race to watch was between the #01 of Towles and the #04 of Lundeen as both battled fiercely for that cherished first place spot. Towles took the lead on the start, but Lundeen make his move on lap five to take over first and never looked back. Finishing order was #04 Rick Lundeen taking the checkers with #01 of Ron Towles finishing 2nd, #09 of Dan Nyhan crossing 3rd, #06 of Bob Quick fighting his way from 8th to 4th and the #66 of Chris Harrison taking 5th.

The Ministock heat race was won by the #01 driven by Jacob Antis with the #49 of Bill Stalnaker closing for 2nd and the #20 of Joe Lawson taking 3rd.

The #20 of Joe Lawson won the drag race down the front stretch to take the Feature lead with the #01 of Antis dropping in behind and the #59 of Bill Stalnaker running a close 3rd. Stalnaker took over 2nd place on lap 2, but suddenly began to fade and retired to the pits on lap 6. Finishing order was #20 of Joe Lawson taking the checkers, the #01 of Jacob Antis finishing 2nd, the #4 of Larry Penny crossing 3rd, the #4B of Wayne Penny taking 4th.

The first Pure Stock heat race surprised everyone when they ran a caution free six laps with the #97 of Joey Rolling winning, the #L88 of J.D. Coffey taking 2nd and the #13 of Marty Wood crossing 3rd. Heat race 2 was won by the #85 of Aaron Smith with the #17 of Gene O'Steen crossing in 2nd and the #34 of Wesley Keller taking 3rd.

Joey Rolling beat the field to the first turn to take the lead as the #85 of Aaron Smith tucked in behind and the #17 of Gene O'Steen was pulling out all the stops to get to the front. O'Steen dropped into 2nd on lap 3 to harrass and harrange the #97 of Rolling for the next 15 laps. While O'Steen was preoccupied with Rolling, the #34 of Wesley Keller stayed glued to O'Steen's bumper and waited for that one lucky break which came on the last lap, as he made his move past the #17 to take over 2nd place. Finishing order was #97 of Joey Rolling taking the win and the #34 of Keller sitting happy in 2nd. #17 of Gene O'Steen, the current pure stock points leader finishing in 3rd, the L88 of J.D. Coffey having a fine run for 4th and the #31 of Trisha Taylor still enjoying that new car feeling with a great 5th place finish.

Please come join us for some great short track racing next week and don't forget the Triple Crown 300 on October 26th. Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Ministocks will each run a 100 lap, $3,000 to win race that will pit the best of the best from many tracks in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Qualifying will be at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26th and Feature Racing starts at 7:00 p.m.

On November 16th, Lake City Speedway will host a 75 lap Super Late Model Race for $3,000 to win, as well as Ministock, Pure Stock and Street Stock racing. Racing will start at 7:00 p.m. with the last points race for the local divisions and the big Super Late Models mixing it up for 75 laps of excitement.
