Jerry Symons Wins Ed Meridith Memorial at New Smyrna Speedway

Dark clouds surrounded the track but only a few little
sprinkles in the air. In the pits were 17 Open Wheel
Modifieds ready for the 100 lap Ed Meridith Memorial.

Jerry Symons set fast time with a 18.992 second lap
followed by Brian Campbell with a 19.112; J.F.
McClelland with a 19.160; Red Vann with a 19.163 and
Rob Underwood with a 19.179. After the pill was
drawn, it was Jim Flynn on the pole with Rob Underwood
on the outside.

The race had seven cautions during the 100 lap event.
Some of the best modifieds did not finish the race due
to either wrecks or tire problems.

Jim "Hoot" Flynn #57 led for the first 16 laps of the
race until the #66 Jerry Symons took the lead and never
looked back. Restart after restart, Symons was able to
get the jump on the field for the lead.

Coming home with a second place finish was the #00 Brad
May who drove one very good race. Following Symons
across the checkers was #00 Brad May, #01 J. F. McClelland,
#32 Red Vann, and #7 Mark Vandevender. The #5 was running
ahead of Vandevender but was a few laps down from having
to pit.

Following Vandevender was #75 Don Keithly, #2x Bobby Blake,
#98, #00 Wayne Southard, #4b Alan Bruns, and #721 John
Bennett.

In the three make-up races from last week's rainout the
winners were:

Mini Stock
l. #7 Tim "Missileman" McPhail
2. #1 David Castello
3. #71 Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus
4. #34 Josh Robinson
5. #v3 Rex Christensen
6. #00 Mike Sible
7. #90 Toby Sims

Sportsman
1. #111 Donnie Williams
2. #07 Ron Lufcy
3. #3 Marty Wolf
4. #46 Mike Trocki
5. #70 John Nusbaum
6. #28 Chris Peludant

Super Stocks
1. #45 Mike Soukup
2. #2 Ron Whaley
3. #27 Ted Head
4. #61 Ted Helms
5. #07 Kevin Auger

Late Models saw the #8 Tim Clark on the pole for the feature
event and leading for about the first 3 laps until the #77
Brian Bellaw took over the lead. Chris Lawrence #63 made
his move on Clark and took the second place spot bringing
along #43 Randy Dye to take third with Clark in fourth.

The #4 Cynthis Strahley and the #23 Joey Pletka got
together and both retired to the pits. On the restart,
Randy Dye passes Lawrence for the lead but coming to the
checkers on the last lap, Dye hits oil on the track and
spins. Lawrence goes ahead to take the win followed by
#8 Tim Clark, #77 Brian Bellaw, #48 Mark Smith, #7 Charlie
Mertz, #11 Steve Redditt, #43 Randy Dye, #23 Joey Pletka,
and #4 Cynthis Strahely.

On the second feature for the Mini Stocks, it took 2
tries to get a green. Tim McPhail #7 ended up switching
to his backup car for the race as the other car was sent
into the wall on the second restart. Now the race would
be started single file with #1 David Castello on the pole.

Castello quickly jumped to the lead and as they say "never
looked back". Ted Vulipus #71 and Tim McPhail #7 both did
a great job of working their way from the rear to the front
of the field. Two of the drivers running in second at one
point in the race seemed to be cursed by the full moon
as both #34 Josh Robinson and #11 Pug Puglisi had to pit
after running a very good race.

Following Castello to the checkers was #7 Tim "Missileman"
McPhail, #71 Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus, #0 Vern Rozier
(this was a great finish for Vern after coming back from
a not so good wreck), #36 Whit Satterwhite, #90 Tody Sims,
#4 Ron Dubois, #00 Mike Sible, #v3 Rex Christensen, #33,
#77 Jamie Williams, #11 Pug Puglisi, and #34 Josh Robinson.

Ricky Wood #33 sat on the pole for the Super Late Model
feature event but it was #11 David Rogers who lead the
field to the checkers. Following Rogers was #33 Ricky
Wood, #5 Derek Strong and #8 Brent Hobbs.

John Nusbaum #70 sat on the pole for the Sportsman
second feature but it was #46 Mike Trocki who jumped to
the lead on the green. But it was the #09 who took over
until the #111 Donnie Williams quickly made his way to
the front. Following Williams once again to the checkers
was #09, #07 Ron Lufcy, #3 Marty Wolf, #2 Bill Love, #46
Mike Trocki, #19 Mitch Dougherty, #70 John Nusbaum.

Ted Helms #61 sat on the pole for the feature event of their
second race of the night. But it was #27 Ted Head who
quickly took the lead over Helms. But one more lead
change would come about as the #23 Charlie Collins would
take the point and never look back. Following Collins to
the checkers was #27 Ted Head, #211 Jack Lenzen, #2 Ron
Whaley, and #64 Bill Cuddy. This division will go for a
50 lap race next weekend.

Strictly Stocks saw the #63 Curtis Smith take the win for
their feature event followed by #62 Travis Scott, #27
Barry Parks, #8 Faris Crews, and #65 James Smith.

NEXT WEEKEND AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY THE T.B.A.R.A. WINGED
SPRINTS AND A 50 LAP SUPER STOCK FEATURE. NO SUPER LATES,
LATES OR MINI STOCKS.
