Rains Win Out At Citrus County

Thunder Storms Win Out at Citrus

(Inverness, Fl. 8/18/02) There was a full pit, ready to race, but the weather just wouldn'tt cooperate. The weather was hot and sunny when the gates opened in preparation for week 22 of the 2002 season with some point races ready to do a little shuffling. Warm up sessions went on from 3 until 5:45 as scheduled and then a short rain shower slowed the regular 6 p.m. start for about an hour with track vehicles being assisted by racecars in drying the track out.

At 6:45 the track was dry enough to get the first Hobby Stock heat rolling with Daniel Webster coming off the outside pole and taking the flag to flag win. It went all for naught as the second heat was lining up a lightning strike cleared the grandstands in a matter of minutes. Several more followed, then the bottom dropped out to end the prospects of any further racing taking place on this night. This was the fifth rain out of the 2002 season.

The Powder Puff race was scheduled to end the night of action with eleven drivers registered to take a crack at the 3/8ths mile racecourse for the first time for the ladies. The race will be rescheduled for a date to be announced at a later date. This will allow the drivers to get out and get more money sponsors to help with the point fund. The driver that collects the most money will win the pole starting position. The balance of the lineup will be set up according to the dollar amount that the drivers have been able to collect. This is an annual event for the amateur lady drivers who can talk their significant others out of their racecar so they can get a feel for what they go through on! a weekly basis and add to the point fund that the top ten drivers in their divisions will share in at the end of the season.

Rain has affected a total of eleven races this season and certainly has held down on the fan participation. Now the fans and drivers will have to take another week off or go somewhere else next Saturday due to the Citrus County Fair Antique Tractor Show and Tractor Pull, which has become and very popular annual event at the fairgrounds. It has normally been run the week after the end of the regular racing season and has not interrupted the action.

When racing action continues on August 31st, all six regular divisions will get down to the nitty gritty in pursuit of there individual championship crowns and their share of the dollars in the points fund. Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Thunder Stocks will have 12 more races to improve their positions as the second half of the season gets back on track. Late Models will have two more Citrus Show Down 125s for $5,000 and the Fall Finale 150 for $7,500 to win. These are non-point races. They only have 8 more races to decide the winner of the crown in the Late Model division. The Figure 8s return on the 31st of August and will race on the 28th of September, the 26th of October and their final race on November 9th. This of course will be dependent on the weather conditions that have been a big consideration to this point in the season.

One other special will feature the super quick Sprint cars on October 5th. Several sprint cars have come to try the new configuration and have broken into the high 12-second bracket on the 3/8ths mile racecourse. Those heavy hitters who have run the quarter mile layout are expected to break into the mid 12s as the fastest running racers ever to run at Citrus County Speedway.

Promoters Billy Hooker and Jimmy Ware are trying to get up close and personal with Mother Nature to reschedule our rain showers for some more convenient times during the week where they wont interfere with the balance of the racing program this season.
