Gary Palmer Wins the Late Model Sportsman Feature at Lake City Speedway

By Shirley Lynch

After last week's rain caused cancellation of racing at Lake City Speedway, fans and drivers showed up Saturday night anxious to get in a night of fun. Gary Palmer won the Late Model Sportsman heat with Tom Jones, Jr. and Everett Phillips finishing 2nd and 3rd.

As the green flag dropped on the Late Model Sportsman Feature, the #37Jr. of Palmer led from green to checkers in the caution free race. The #21 of Tom Jones, Jr. ran 2nd for 23 laps when #28 Everett Phillips made a pass on lap 24 to take over the 2nd position. Finishing order was #37Jr. Gary Palmer, #29 Everett Phillips, #21 Tom Jones, Jr., #48 Richard Souter and #J1 Jay Johnson.

The modified field, suffering from a low turnout, ran a feature race only with #18 Derek Crawford taking the checkers. The F1 of Kyle Owen was unable to make a pass on Crawford and settled into the 2nd place spot, with the #96 of Donnie Higgonbotham finishing 3rd and the #59 of Bill Stalnaker finishing 4th.

Heat 1 of the Street Stock class got off to a bang as a 1st lap melee sent the 32B of Kevin Bedenbaugh into the dirt berm in turn 3 and to the pits with three flat tires. The #00 of David Lashley took the win with the #41 of Randy Smith and the #84 of Skip Haskett finishing 2nd and 3rd. Heat #2 saw the NINE car, driven by Wayno Risner lead start to finish followed by the #31 of Shane Taylor and #44 of Dean Sands.

The Street Stock Feature provided the fans with lots of excitement as nobody held back putting the pedal to the metal. The NINE of Wayno Risner led all 25 laps, but was disqualified at tech when his car owner refused to allow a post-race technical inspection. The #31 of Shane Taylor made a pass on the #00 of David Lashleey on lap 4 which put Taylor in 2nd and ultimately gave him the win with Risner DQ'd after the race. The #44 of Dean Sands had a good run as he moved up from 6th starting position to finish 2nd. #38 of Randdy Merwin finished 3rd, #8 of Debbie Shepard took 4th and #41 Randy Smith brought home 5th.

Ministocks ran a feature only with the #59 of Bill Stalnaker beating the #63 of Spencer Buzbee to turn one and taking the lead to win the 15 lap race. Jeff Stalnaker, Sr., driving the #10 mini mounted a challenge, but couldn't find the horsepower to overtake the leader and finished 2nd. The #03 of Curtis Clark found new real estate to drive on, bringing out two cautions, but finished a respectable 3rd with #63 of Buzbee finishing 4th and #1 Joe Waldron taking 5th.

A packed field of Pure Stocks showed up ready to do battle and 3 exciting heats later, the battlefield was set. The #65 ofColeman Jandle III won the first heat with #28 Trisha Taylor coming from 7th position to finish 2nd and #33 of Jason Parker taking 3rd. Heat #2 saw #17 of Gene O'Steen take the win, the #65J of Mike Havard finish 2nd and #38 Troy Davis coming in 3rd. The #04 of Jake Mosley won heat #3 and #84 of Aaron Smith and #49 of Chris Chamberlain finishing 2nd & 3rd.

As the green flag waved for the 24 car Pure Stock Feature, the crowd held their breath as the field charged into turns 1 & 2 and were as surprised as the drivers that the entire field came through unscathed. The good luck didn't hold as lap 2 became the 1st caution of the race. The next green flag lap saw the #65 of Coleman Jandle III leading with #04 Jack Mosley and #65J of Mike Havard following close behind. Jandle experienced problems and retired to the pits to give the #04 the lead. Although #17 Gene O'Steen made a valian effort, he couldn't pull off a pass and finished 2nd behind #04 of Mosley. The #65J of Mike Havard finished 3rd, #33 of Jason Parker finished 4th, and #28 Trisha Taylor had a great night with a 5th place finish.

Lake City Speedway hosted the Open Wheel Lite cars and had a good field of 16 come try their luck. Names are not available, but finish order for heat race #1 was #21, #21X, & #06. Heat race #2 finish order was #09, #69 & #02. The Open Wheel Lite Feature race provided some good competition as the #21 and #21X battled throughout the race for the lead. The 21X slipped up on lap #19 and the #06 and #69 took advantage to make a pass. Finishing order for the feature was #21, #06, #69, #21X & #11.

Please join us for more exciting racing next week at Lake City Speedway with Late Model Sportsman, Modified, Street Stock, Pure Stock and Mini Stock action, with heat racing starting promptly at 7:30 p.m. and our newly structured racing program completed at approximately 11:00 p.m.
