Robert Kissam Wins Auburndale Demo Derby

By Billie May

Mother Nature got the Auburndale Speedway show started late but we got in all the action packed racing Saturday night.

Due to the weather the heat races were cancelled and all features were run adding an extra 5 laps to all classes except LLM and they ran an extra 10 laps.

The Demo-Derby was the feature of the night with # 911 Robert Kissam taking the win and our very own Jamie Dunnahoe was one of the last 3 cars running it was a good Demo even with it being muddy!

The V-8 Street Stocks had an awesome race with 21 cars starting. The front fow consisted of # 09 Patrick Manzi and # 62 James Stinson and on the start Manzi got the lead but only for a lap until a 3 car spin in turn 3 brings out the caution for a complete restart.

Manzi gets the lead on the restart with # 00 Rodney Peterson running 2nd until # 2 George Gorham Jr. gets under him for the spot, Manzi goes high coming out of turn 4 comes back down into traffic and gets bounced back into the wall but keeps going, cars were slipping and sliding but up front # 16 David Purvis goes to the inside of Gorham for the lead then caution again for # 65 Brian Harbin breaking something mechanical and stalling on the track.

Racing resumes and # 29 Rodney Richardson gets sideways out of turn 2 turns and hits the wall head-on collecting # 99 Jason Deaton and # 68 of Mike Wilson, but they were all able to continue. Lap 7 restart # 40 Mike Pitts and # 75 Carl Thompson Jr. got under # 32 David Hol! ! land for the 5th and 6th spot, but another caution for Manzi scraping and stopping against the frontstretch wall breaking his right front axle ending his night.

Peterson gets on the move and gets the 2nd spot from Gorham and Pitts follows to 3rd, after another restart Mike Pitts goes to the outside of Peterson for 2nd and challenges Purvis on the outside for a couple laps and gets the win after starting in the 19th spot, David Purvis 2nd, and Rodney Peterson 3rd.

Alot of passing and some changes in the finishing order after this 4-Cyl. Bomber race was over.

Darryl Ashmore Jr. took to the front only to have the caution come out after # 7 Chad Ashley and # 54 Jimmy Smith get together and spin plus # 96 Larry Chumney II was slow and stalled on the track.

Restart Ashmore gets the lead again until # 27 Wayne Guy gets him sideways and takes the top spot, after problems on the 1st start Chumney running up to speed gets on the outside of # 3 Terry Jones for 5th and then under # 1 David Jouppi for 4th but then he bumps into Ashley and causes Ashley to spin Ashmore out in turn 4, officials put Ashmore back in 2nd and Chumney to the rear for the altercation.

On the restart Jouppi and Ashley both go high coming out of turn 2 and Jones makes it 3-wide to move up to 3rd Jouppi gets under Jones and retakes 3rd Ashmore follows, but they tangle and go off the track allowing Jones to move up a couple spots.

Another caution for a couple cars spinning&n! bsp; bringing ! the field to another restart the top 5 were Wayne Guy, Jones, # 21 Keith Shirah, # 43 Kevin Lumley and Jouppi. Shirah goes around Jones for 2nd and challenges for the lead and Jones follows dropping Guy back to 3rd, Lumley and Chumney slip by Jouppi and Guy to get into the 3rd and 4th spots, but Keith Shirah took the lead and spread it out to take the win with Terry Jones 2nd and Kevin Lumley 3rd.

After post race inspections # 21 Ketih Shirah was DQed for his carburator giving the win to # 3 Terry Jones, Kevin Lumley 2nd, and moving Larry Chumney into top 3.

All red front row for the Super Stock feature with David and Aaron Williamson starting 1st and 2nd and on the start Aaron Williamson got the top spot David 2nd and teamate # 14 Andy Dorman running 3rd until the caution comes out for a spinning car.

On the restart # 34 Jeff McCaw gets under # 63 Chris Kingham for 4th then # 80 Dustin Breeden does the same dropping Kingham back to 5th, meanwhile McCaw goes to the inside of Dorman to take over the 3rd position, another caution for # 2 Paul Gibbs who loses it, spins out of turn 2 and goes sliding through the muddy infield almost hitting the push truck he was able to continue in the race.

Restart top 5 were Aaron Williamson, David Williamson, Jeff McCaw, Andy Dorman, and Dustin Breeden after another caution alot of beating and banging going on in the middle of the pack and Gibbs gets a flat tire and stops on the track bringing out the last caution, racing resumes and McCaw was on the move getting under David Williamson for 2nd and setting his sights on Aaron Williamson he got under him and they were side-by-side for the last 2 laps and McCaw got the win, Aaron Williamson 2nd and David Williamson 3rd.

With the FMSC race at another track it took a couple of Mini-Stock competitors out of the mix and put some other familiar faces in the winners circle.

Burt Morse # 88 took the lead and was unchallenged until # 89 Scott Sharpe was putting pressure on Morse for the lead, trying the inside and the outside for several laps but had to settle back into the 2nd spot for a bit, # 60 Greg Valdez and # 42 Jimmy Frazier Jr. tangle in turn 4 bringing out the yellow flag. Racing starts and Sharpe was trying again to challenge for the lead but comes up short and Morse takes the win, Sharpe 2nd and # 29 Richie Acres 3rd.

The LLM, the fast class of the night, had # 63 Wesley Bass on the pole and points leader # 65 Ollie Harbin outside.

Bass took the lead from the start Harbin 2nd, # 1 Bart Weatherford 3rd, # 45 Sam Cressman 4th and # 25 Billy Norris running 5th # 00 Ronnie Heard and Norris go high and # 01 Bryan Storer and # 71 Dave Dunkin scoot under them for the 5th and 6th positions.

Cressman drops off the pace and loses a couple spots moving Storer and Dunkin to 4th and 5th, Dunkin trying the outside several times on Storer but couldn't make the pass. Wesley Bass leading from the start takes the win, Ollie Harbin 2nd and Bart Weatherford coming home 3rd.

Next week Auburndale Speedway will be closed because of the Pepsi 400 running. The racing action will resume on July 13th with LLM, Super Stocks, 4-Cyl. Bombers, V-8 Street Stocks, Mini-Stocks plus Racing for Kids Club.

Racing starts at 7:00pm Saturday night and don't forget the Bike give-a-way, every child recieves a ticket for their chance to win a new bicycle provided by Storer Racing.

Everyone have a safe and Happy 4th of July weekend, God Bless America!
