Late Race Charge Pays Off For Padgett

By Jon Harney

Lake City, FL - Bobby Padgett led only four laps of the 40-lap main event for Late Model Sportsman cars, but one of those laps paid off well at the window. Jeff Henry set fast time and was the dominant car for much of the race. Padgett didn't appear to have anything for Henry in the first half of the race but may have been saving his car for the end. A late race caution bunched up the field and Padgett saw his opportunity on the restart. He zipped past Henry, then held Henry off the remaining laps for his second win in a row at Lake City Speedway. Following the lead duo to the stripe was Wayne Stevens, Todd Williams, and Jay Johnson.

The Street Stock race was mired in heavy controversy. Shane Taylor and Jason Garver were battling for the lead on lap four when both cars made contact on the front straight and took a wild ride. Taylor's left rear tire sheared from his car, sailed over the catchfence, and bounced its way to the parking lot. A little vehicular damage to a parked car resulted, but fortunately nobody was injured. Despite being involved, Garver was allowed to keep his position in the lead and the race resumed. The race got messy in the middle stages as many accidents begat many cautions. Garver survived the yellowfest to hold off Adam Bedenbaugh for the win. Controversy continued after the race when the track ruled that Garver had attemped the pass beneath the track surface and subsequently disqualified him. This gave the win to Adam Bedenbaugh. Dean Sands padded his points lead with a second place finish. Kevin Bedenbaugh was third ahead of Randy Smith and Marvin Hassell.

Kyle Owen came up just four laps short of pulling off an upset win over Derek Crawford in Modifieds. Crawford has held the hot hand in the last two months, but Owen withstood a heavy, competitive challenge from Crawford up to lap 16 to maintain a white-knuckle ride in the lead. Coming out of turn 4, the crankshaft broke on the Owen machine which ended his night. Crawford had little trouble disposing of the remaining cars as he rode off for win number 6. Bill Johnson, Randy Cribb Jr., Jason Garver, and Jim Carpenter finished out the top five.

Jeff Stalnaker Sr. had the field under his thumb for the Mini Stock finale as he sped off with the lead. Unfortunately his car proved mutinous and broke on lap three. Curtis Clark and Jeff Stalnaker Jr., both hungry for their first win, put on an entertaining race for the fans for several laps until Jr. gained control on lap seven. Jr. went on to walk away with the victory with Clark second, Larry Penny third, Chris Antis fourth, and Joe Clark fifth.
