Minchew Takes His Third Victory of the Season at Volusia Speedway

(June 8, 2002)Barberville, FL - The special race of the night was the Mechanic's Race. What's good about letting your mechanic race your car...if he breaks it...he can fix it! With cars from every division except Late Models there were 4 winners for this special race. Street Stock #4p Fred Peters - Hobby Stock #8c Harold Wishhard - Mini Stock #99 Todd Morgan and Pure Stock #75 Wayne Pawlak proved they know how to build them and race them!

DeLand Truck Center Late Models - It took several attempts to start the 30 lap feature but as the checker flew it was #23 Lawton Minchew in victory lane for two wins in a row and three for the season.

As the race started, #11 Roho Sims was fast and out front. #07 David Clegg was doing everything he could to get around #57 Chuck Julien and actually got too close at one point bumping Julien and taking off some of the nose of his racecar. Sims had serious competition as #17 Joe Kump kept hammering on him lap after lap. By lap 3 Clegg was able to get around Julien taking Minchew with him. Clegg had a wicked fast race car even with the damage to the nose. Kump took the lead from Sims on lap 7 on the backstretch. Sims drifted high on the track with apparent engine trouble. Kump had a huge lead over Clegg but Minchew was all over Clegg. Lap traffic began to give the leaders trouble and Kump lost precious ground as he finally got around Rookie #23s Patrick Sheltra.

All eyes were on 2nd and 3rd place as Clegg and Minchew fought each other for position. On lap 21 it was another leader with trouble as Kump went high on the track with obvious trouble. Minchew saw what was happening and shot to the inside of Clegg as Clegg slowed slightly to see what Kump was going to do. After the restart due to a caution to get Kump off the track, Clegg spun in turn 2 and ended his night in the pits.

With only 7 laps to go #15 Joe Grubbs got loose and hit the inside pit wall on the front stretch sending debris all over the track and gathering up #14 Gary Flynn and #24 Scott Smith as they tried to avoid the mess.

When all was said and done, Minchew took his third victory lap of the 2002 season.

OB's Restaurant and Lounge Hobby Stocks-A-Main-Lady Luck was on #19 Kory Bush' side as he lost the lead and took it back again for a win in the Hobby Stock A-Main feature.

The race was caution free until lap 15 and after that it was caution after caution. On lap 2 #19 Kory Bush took the lead from #64 Trevor Gamble with #15 Alan Peacock holding on to a close third place. By lap 5 Bush had a big lead and the battle won on for second. Peacock got sandwiched between the Gamble brothers with #64 Trevor Gamble in front and #46 Travis behind him.

On lap 8 #46 Travis Gamble took third from Peacock and #1m David Kinsey followed suit putting Peacock back to fifth.

The first caution was thrown as #02 Jimmy Heffner and #19 Joe Belkey got together and Belkey spun in turn 3. With 5 laps to go the field tightened up on the restart #64 Trevor Gamble got side by side with Bush and passed him for the lead before a caution was thrown as a car got turned around in turn 2 and as the field rounded turn 1, #1m David Kinsey spun to avoid. On the restart #15 Alan Peacock took third from #46 Travis Gamble. Travis slowed with a flat tire and ended up in the pits as his brother Trevor spun and lost his lead to #19 Kory Bush for his feature win.

Action Performance Street Stocks - It was an action packed finish as #007 Todd Ponce won the feature after passing last week's winner #00 John Ripley on a restart after a major caution.

From the beginning #11 Pat Varieka seemed to have the car to beat. Varieka and Ripley put their cars out front for a several car lead. There were two races going on as the top three spots and 4th through 6th were close. On lap 9 smoke began to pour out of the Varieka's racecar as he suffered more motor trouble. As Varieka slowed and went high on the track, #00 John Ripley took the lead with #007 Todd Ponce close behind him for second. #07 Landon Lungren spun, #22 Joe Baker clipped Lungren's car and #4p James Peters had nowhere to go coming to rest in the side of Lungren. Baker ended up in the pits changing a tire and had to fight his way back up for a great 5th place finish.

That's when it all broke loose, Ponce went low on the restart and took the lead from Ripley. Ripley didn't give him a break and stayed on Ponce's bumper for a strong second place finish

Mini Stocks- It was a white lap pass that earned #6 Matt Cawood the win in the Mini Stock feature race.

A caution on lap 4 was thrown as #0 Dan Paterniti and #27 Joey Haslauer got together in turn 3. Paterniti had trouble in the heat race and backed his car into the wall possibly causing problems for the feature. As the field made their way around the track, #0 Mark Paterniti also had car trouble and put his car in the pits.

The Triple 8 of Jamie McCague hit the outside wall in turn 4 on lap 6 and spun almost hitting the corner of the pit wall at the pit entrance. McCague was able to continue the race but was lapped on the next lap.

The action was in the last few laps of the race as #6 Matt Cawood made his move and took several positions and the one that counted first place for the win.

On lap 1 #37 Steve Buker got loose on the front stretch and got together with #8 John Blood, a caution was not thrown until the next lap when debris on the track made safety an issue. On the restart #18 Chris Shead got loose and spun on the front stretch bringing out the second caution of the race.

#43 Joey Froelich made his first attempt to take the lead from #23 Mark Reiter but the caution was thrown before he could make the pass. On the restart #77 Shannon Cleveland got together with #75 Shawn Pawlak, Cleveland spun but was able to restart without bringing out a caution.
