Bellaw Wins Late Model Feature at New Smyrna Speedway

It was a rain free night at New Smyrna Speedway in spite of
the dark clouds surrounding the track. Heats and features
in all divisions was on the schedule with the Mini Cup
cars as the special event of the night.

The #8 and #14 were the big heat winners in the Mini Cup
Cars. The #3 was on the pole for their main event with
the #71 taking the win followed by #98, #57, #31 and #17.

In the Mini Stocks, it was the #71 Ted "Mr Mini Stock"
Vulipus winning heat number 1 and #l David Castello
winning heat number two. On the pole for their feature
event was the #9AR of Charlie Staats but it was the #l
David Castello jumping to the lead on the green followed
by #71 Vulipus in second. The #7 Tim "Missileman" McPhail
had to start from the rear of the field due to his win
the week before and did a great job of working his way
up the field and finally landing the third place position.
Following Castello across the checkers was #71 Ted Vulipus,
#7 Tim McPhail, #23 Wayne Wells, and #07 Dick Laszlo.
Next Friday night at Orlando SpeedWorld the mini stocks
will be in action as the Florida Mini Stock Challenge
races a 50 lap event.

The #16 Justin Henderson took the heat win for the Open
Wheel Modifieds. Henderson also had the pole for the
feature event but on his outside was the #66 Jerry
Symons. Symons jumped to the lead and although Henderson
tried, he could not pass Symons. On the last lap, there
was a little hot action as the lead cars were passing
the lap cars and the #16 Henderson and #20 Kuhel touched
ripping off Henderson's rear tire and sending it on it's
own race across the track. The final results were #66
Jerry Symons, #2x Bobby Blake, #4 Johnny Clark, #16 Justin
Henderson and #20 Ed Kuhel.

Sportsman saw the #lll Donnie Williams take the heat
win. On the pole for the feature event was #07 Ron
Lufcy. Lufcy held the lead until the #lll Williams
took over and that was all she wrote. Following
Williams across the finish line was #07 Ron Lufcy, #77
Danny Shearer, and #28 Chris Peludant.

Only four Super Late Models in the field for the heat
and feature race. #ll David Rogers won both the heat
and feature race. Following Rogers for the checkered
was #3 Wayne Parker, #7 Matt Griffin, and #7x Mark
Vandevender.

Brian Bellaw #77 also took both his heat win and the
feature win in the Late Model division. Once Bellaw got
the lead, there was no looking back. Following Bellaw
to the checkers were #21, #8 Cindy Strahley, #23 Joey
Pletka, and #21x.

#30 Mike Wieczoreck and #2 Ron Whaley were the heat
winners in the Super Stock division. Whaley #2
had the pole for the feature event but it was the #07
who quickly jumped to the lead and kept it for most
of the entire race until the #2ll took over. On the
last lap, #211 got loose and brushed the turn 2 wall
as the #2 Whaley, #61 Ted Helmes and #30 Wieczoreck
all got together coming off turn 2. The #61 of Ted
Helmes, who had to start in the rear of the field since
he won the big 50 lapper last week, was still driving
one handed from his racing accident and having been
burned by a radiator hose. Helmes did a great job
of working his way to the front from the rear. Need-
After the mix-up on the last lap, it was #2 Ron Whaley,
#30 Mike Wieczoreck and #61 Ted Helmes in the first
three positions.

The Strictly Stocks were teched after their race and
all but one was found illegal. At this time, I do not
know the final finishing order for the Strictly Stocks.

Next weekend, 6-15, the Florida Sunbelt Super Late Model
Series travels to Charlotte County Speedway for the first
leg of the Triple Crown. New Smyrna Speedway will have
no Super Late Models but heats and features in all other
divisions.

Final Finishing Order Strictly Stocks 6/8
1. #65 James Smith
2. #63 Curtis Smith
3. #8x Kevin Reece
4. #24 Ken Marshall
5. #lW Joe Whittenton
