Brett Carlton Wins Late Model at Volusia Speedway Park

Brett Carlton put his car into victory lane after
leading every lap of the 30 lap Late Model feature.
Carlton haed the race wrapped up but the battle for
every other position was up in the air.

David Clegg was next in line and pressuring Carlton while
#23 Lawton Minchew and #57 Chuck Julien fought for
the third position with Minchew winning that fight
and Julien settling for a strong fourth.

The next three positions were a tight race betwen #241
Greg Ward, #33 Bill Kopka and last week's winner #17
Joe Kump. They weren't giving up the fight but when
the checker was thrown it was Kopka crossing the line
ahead of Kump and Ward.

Action Performance Street Stock - Three lead changes
between three drivers but the last one is the one that
counts and #57 Wally Schneider won his first Street
Stock Feature race Saturday night at Volusia Speedway
Park.

In the early laps of the race #26 George Lane seemed to
have the car to beat. Lane survived several cautions,
the first of which occured on lap 2 as #00 John Ripley
and #07 Landon Lungren dance around each other in
turns l and 2. On lap 4 #4 Bobby Johal lost his right
front wheel and tire bringing out caution #2. Sometimes
the battles behind the leader prove to be interesting
as #73 Rick Swank and #07 Landon Lungren fought at the
back of the pack until lap 6 when they touched and
Lungren ended up with one less bumper and Swank ended
up in the pits.

#11 Pat Varieka a regular fast contender was making his
way to the front, Newcomer #2 Scott Lagassee was the
next to lose a tire and bring out the caution. As
Lagassee tried to control his racecar the cars behind
him had their hands full trying to avoid disaster but
#22 Joe Baker and #66 Frank Sharp couldn't avoid the
obvious and Sharp climbed up and over Baker's front
end putting both cars in the pits.

At the half way mark the leader, #26 George Lane Jr.
lost it and spun turning the lead over to the #5 Kevin
Zahnen led the next five laps until feature winner #57
Wally Schneider took over on lap 15 and never relin-
quished the top spot to take checker as the clock ran
down. It took teamwork to get to victory lane,
literally as Schneider made his checker flag lap but
stopped feet short of victory lane and his entire crew
ran to push the car to the line.

OB's Restaurant and Lounge Hobby Stock - 2002 Points
Leader, #88 Dennis North padded his lead with a win
Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park.

The 5 lead changes between 4 differnt drivers made the
Hobby Stock fature exciting. #55 Al Sanville won last
week and won the heat race but was unable to hold on
to the lead for more than 3 laps as #12 Rick Friend
made his way around Sanville on lap 3. As Friend made
his move #19 Kory Bush dropped to the bottom of the
track taking second with Sanville holding on for a
third place spot. At the same time #96 Bill Littel got
loose and gathered up #64 Trevor Gamble. Gamble got
turned around bringing out the caution and tightening
up the field for the restart.

Littel pulled it together and was able to pass #19 Kory
Bush for second. The action behind the leaders heated
up as Points leader and eventual winner #88 Dennis North
had made his way up to 4th by lap 10.

An ill handling racecar ended the night for $64 Trevor
Gamble when he slowed and came to a stop in turn l on
lap 10. Gamble was towed to the pits for the remainder
of the race.

As the clock ran down and only 12 laps on the board #12
Rick Friend was still leading ahead of #88 Dennis North.
It was green, white and Checker for the leaders and on the
white flag lap North went low took the lead and held on
for the final lap, the one that counts! It was North,
Friend, #18 Richard Price, #19 Kory Bush and #02 Jimmy
Hefner in the top spots.

Mini Stock - Saturday night #6 Matt Cawood made it two
weeks in a row in victory lane at Volusia Speedway Park.

On lap l, #69 Brad Fender got loose and spun in turn 4
coing to a stop facing the oncoming traffic. Fender's
luck was better this week, every car in the field got by
him without incident.

In was caution #2 on lap 3 when #00 Mark Paterniti got
sideways and gathered up #777 Ken Mason and #2 Matt
Hartley. Polesitter #86 Robert Peterson lost the lead
on lap 4 to #17 Doug White. A caution on lap 4 bunched
the field up and on the restart #k9 Mike Cawood slips up
the track, spins, and hits the outside wall bringing out
another caution. The leader, White, pulled into the pits
on lap 9 with engine problems.

Feature winner #6 Matt Cawood took the lead and never
looked back until he was out of his car on the front
straightaway getting his trophy!

Pure Stock - After leading 14 laps #17 Marvin Prentice
took his first win in 2002.

Prentice seemed to walk away from the field and began
lapping cars on lap 10. #9 Rick Picard didn't ease up
on Prentice and was his only threat for the lead. Picard
closed in on Prentice with only 2 laps to go but Prentice
was able to hold off the hard charging Picard and take the
win.
