Casey Johnson Wins Again At East Bay

by Ken Sands

TAMPA, Fla. (May 25, 2002) - Seventeen-year-old Casey Johnson piloting the Kenny Mulligan #3, took the lead from Sarasota's Paulie Milum on lap 5 and easily cruised home the winner on Saturday night at East Bay Raceway. Johnson started 9th in the field and had the Mulligan Mopar powered #3 hooked up as he claimed his third win of the 2002 season. Point leader Brian Maddox took second followed by 16 year old Danny Martin Jr., Milum and Mike Senecal.

In Late Models, Rusty Dixon in his Cherry's of Summerfield/Myakka Brokers #97 held the top spot for the first 18 laps until Bobby Alexander Sr. grabbed the lead. Alexander held the top spot for only 2 laps when Jack Nosbisch Jr. powered his Adams Used Auto Parts #12 into the lead and held on to claim the win. Alexander Sr, Donnie Tanner, Bill Howard and Dixon rounded out the top 5.

Wayne Hammond took the lead from Greg Reutimann and just nipped Bruce Watkins at the line to take his third win of the season in Open Wheel Modifieds. Hammond and Watkins came out of turn 4 on the last lap in a virtual tie, with Hammond just nosing the Brandon Ford #48 ahead at the stripe, Watkins, the points leader settled for a fine run in second over John Bradley, Dean Varnadore and Randy Thomas.

Terry Gay, by virtue of a few bad finishes started on the pole of the Limited Late Model main and led every lap enroute to the win, however Bill Howard in the 11B car almost denied Gay the win as he charged from back in 11th to finish right on the rear bumper of Gay. Jeff Mathews, William Hampton and Roger Crouse rounded out the top 5.

Chad Rose claimed his third win of the season in Mini Stocks. Rose was sporting Dayton Andrews Dodge as his new sponsor and charged from his 12th starting spot to take the win over Kenny Rutledge, Scotty Williams, Dorsey Strickland and Robert Douglas.

Points leader Mike Gamache continued his streak as he claimed another Street Stock A Main over Jason Bronson, Paul Davis, Eric Johnson and Rob Hall.

Chris Cherry took the Street Stock B Main, with Alan Jack claiming the Pure Stock win.

The night's racing was sponsored by Beardon Oil and the fine folks from Sunoco Race Fuels.
