Chuck Stevens Wins 25 Lap Pure Stock Feature at Charlotte County Speedway

by Danny Snow

#19 Scott McDaniel (hometown not listed) had the pole for
the start of the Keels N Wheels Pure Stock twenty five lap
feature. As #74 Chuck Stevens (Fort Myers) was making his
way up, #55 Conrad Molter (Naples) made his way to third
by lap six. By the fifteenth lap it was #74 Stevens out
front and #55 Molter in second. A caution on lap twenty
two bunched up the pack and set the scene for a three lap
dash for the cash. #74 Stevens held for the win with #55
Molter in second and #19 McDaniel in third.

The Collier Electric Sportsman Division took the track next
for their thirty lap feature with #72V Shawn Van Wie
(Naples) on the pole. #62 Buzz Martin (LeHigh Acres) took
the lead on the first lap only to end up heading to the
pits with a fuel leak, putting #20 George Ellsworth
(North Fort Myers) out front. #9 Jerry Bryant (Punta
Gorda) was trying to take second on lap twenty two, but
his hopes were dashed when he got caught up in a three
car caution and ended up with a flat tire. #22 Danny
Yates (Cape Coral) made a move for the top spot on lap
twenty four, but wound up in a spin, bringing out the
caution flag. #20 Ellsworth took the win with #100
Jim Keating (Bonita Springs) in second. #22 Yates
battled his way back up to take third.

Nineteen cars lined up for the W.E. Johnson Equipment
Road Warriors twenty lap feature. #88 Larry Rudd
(North Port) had the pole for the "Thundering Herd"
as the green flag dropped. Almost half of the field
tangled up in turns one and two before the first lap
was completed, bringing out the red flag. All but one
made it back out after dashing into the pits for some
quick repairs by their pit crews. #08 Steve South
(Bonita Springs) started on point but by the end of
the first lap it was #5 Bob Waltz (Cape Coral) in the
lead. #61 Chris Oncken (Fort Myers) took the lead on
the fifth lap and held on for the remainder of the
race to take the win. #0 Clete Trimmer (Fort Myers)
came in second with #l Jesse Gargus (North Fort Myers)
in third.

#14 Randy Layman (Lehigh Acres) sat on the pole for the
Thunder Trucks twenty five lap feature race. Lap six
saw #44 Randy Tucker (North Fort Myers) make a move for
the lead and get bumped by #14 Layman bringing out a
caution. #44 Tucker was out front for the restart and
#14 Layman was at the back of the pack. A battle for
first place on laps eighteen through twenty two between
#22 John Garrett (Fort Myers) and #37 Cheryl Weaver
(Port Charlotte) ended with #22 Garrett taking the lead
and the win. Garrett and Weaver started from the last
positions. #37 Weaver came in second with #8 Mike
Bialecki (Port Charlotte) in third.

The Keels N Wheels Open Wheel Modifieds took to the track
for the main event, their l00 lap race and #12S Joe
Sumasky (Lehigh Acres) had the pole. Sumasky and #8 DJ
Hoelzle (Dunedin) battled for first as they tried to
negotiate through lapped traffic for some thirty odd
laps before Hoelzle's car broke sending him into the
wall, then to the pits with the help of Prompt Towing
on lap eighty. One the restart, #13 Kevyn Terry (Citra)
ended up on his roof after getting a bit too close to
another car. Terry was all right, but the car was
done for the night. After a strong and hard fought
run in first place, #12S Sumasky lost traction and went
high on lap ninety three passing the lead off to #6
Dwayne Dempsey (St. Pete), who held on for the win.
Dempsey currently holds the track record for the Open
Wheel Modifieds at the home of that "Southern Thunder".
#1 Wayne Jefferson (Pinellas Park) came in second
with #57 Timmy Moore (Pinellas Park) taking third.
