POSAVEC TAKES HOME TROPHY IN SPORTSMAN FEATURE | May 11, 2002 - Ocala, FL - Tom Posavec drove a good race, managed to avoid a multi-car accident and went on to finish 1st in the Steven A. Bagen Sportsman division feature. William Edwards was leading the race when he and Pete Close, Jr. made contact.
Edwards spun in Turn 1. Bob Masciarelli had no place to go and hit Edwards in the side. Several other cars were involved, but everyone managed to walk away, although a couple were limping.
Close, Jr. was sent to the rear of the field, but by race end had worked his way up to the front and finished in 2nd place behind Posavec. Frank Buchanan finished in 3rd followed by Tommy Brakeman and Jim Higginbotham.
The Diamond "H" Air and Heat Modified division put on a good race even though their numbers were few. The cars traded places throughout the field, doing some good side by side racing. Alan McCafferty was able to hold off David Baxley and Troy Robinson to win his second feature race in as many weeks. Robinson got by Baxley to finish 2nd with Baxley in 3rd place.
Tommy Roberts returned to racing a couple of weeks ago and has made his presence know among the other Thrify Nickel Hobby Stock division drivers. Besides being a really nice guy, he is a real competitor. Roberts, Moose Alderman, John Betts, Frank Buchanan, and Mark Mitchell mixed it up but Roberts was too strong and took the checkered flag after leading most of the race. Buchanan finished in 2nd place followed by Alderman, Mitchell, and brand new Daddy, John Betts! Congratulations to John and Lisa on the birth of their daughter on Friday, May 10th!
The WTRS Pure Stock division feature was exciting, as always. Paul Fletcher has really been tough to beat these last few weeks. This is his second win in the past three weeks. Darren Dukes, who seems to always be lurking in the top ten, had a good 2nd place finish followed by Bobby Carter. J. T. Schimborski and David Danielson rounded out the top five finishers. There were a couple of cautions, one coming out when Kyle Maynard spun on the frontstretch. Maynard injured his arm and was taken to the hospital by his parents to be checked out.
The final race of the evening was the Coca Cola 4 Cylinder Bomber division feature. Robert Oxendine, who hadn't raced at the Speedway for a couple of weeks, returned and was ready to take on his opponents and A. J. Schreier, who had pretty much dominated this division, was ready for the challenge. Sitting right behind them waiting for one or both of them to make a mistake was Ric Fort, the current points leader, and quiet Bill Brezner. Oxendine fought them all off and went on to take the win followed by Schreier, Fort, Brezner and Rocky Bowden.
On Saturday, May 18, the Ltd. Late Models will return to the Speedway along with our Sportsman, Hobby Stock, Pure Stock and 4 Cylinder Bomber divisions. Also, mark you calendars now and plan to join us on June 1st when the Speedway will host the Allison Legacy National Event and on June 8th when the T.B.A.R.A. Winged Sprints will return.
