It's time to race!

May 12, 2002

It was Ladies Night at Volusia Speedway Park Saturday - 05/11/02

Barberville, FL - It was Ladies Night at Volusia Speedway Park, for the first Powder Puff race of the season on Mother's Day weekend!#48 Melissa Smith was the lucky lady of the night! Other winners were Late Model - #99 Brent Chilson, Street Stock - #77 Dale Shade, Hobby Stock - #15 Alan Peacock, Mini Stock - #22 Mark Eldridge, Pure Stock - #48 Deric Smith.

Powder Puff - A field of 9 cars took the green and it was #48 Melissa Smith winning her first Powder Puff race. The car was already a winner for the night, #48 won the Pure Stock race too.

Early in the race it was pedal to the floor as #54 MaryAnn Wheaton lost control and spun several times on the front stretch, straightened it out only to lose it again in turn 2 this time hitting the wall and ending the night on the wrecker!

DeLand Truck Center Late Models - It was green to checker for #99 Brent Chilson. It wasn't a large field of cars but it was a fast group. The Late Models ran 30 laps caution free and Chilson came out a winner.

DeLand Truck Center Late Models (1)99 Brent Chilson (2)07 David Clegg (3)33 Bill Kopka (4)23 Lawton Minchew (5)17 Joe Kump (6)41 Mark Davis (7)71 David Shugart (8)57 Chuck Julien (9)88 Chris Vogel (10)45 RoHo Sims

OB's Restaurant and Lounge Hobby Stocks-A-Main - It was a photo finish as #15 Alan Peacock took the lead and won the race by a nose on the last lap. Peacock went high on the backstretch giving it all he had as the leader #8c Jeremy Cline held strong but was unable to get to the line ahead of Peacock.

A red flag was dropped as 4 cars got together on the front stretch on the second lap. #13 Jack Hackney, #19 Kory Bush, #57 Heinz Haas and #89 David Salley all spun and were literally stuck together until the wreckers pulled them apart.

Another caution came on lap #6, #26 Tim Hogan went high in turns 3 and 4, his car climbed the retaining wall but didn't jump it and Hogan was retired to the pits for the rest of the night.

At half way the leader #8c Jeremy Cline was side by side with #21 Chris Manucy, Cline pulled away but #15 Alan Peacock went low and passed Manucy.

The number 13 was unlucky Saturday night, on lap 13 the #13 Philip Brown spun in front of the front of the field, as the leaders checked up and the caution was thrown it went on side by side for several laps.

Time was up and on the white flag lap Peacock made his move on the outside of Cline, when they came across the line it was almost too close to call but Peacock took his first feature win of the 2002 season.

Action Performance Street Stocks - It was mass destruction and sheer excitement as the Street Stocks took to the track and after several caution and time running out #77 Dale Shade, in his flame painted race car took the checker.

In the early laps of the race a terrible crash sending a car over the wall in pieces. #00 John Ripley and #66 Frank Sharp got together on the back stretch. Sharp hit the exit wall on the back stretch and it sent his car over the wall end over end and in several pieces. As the safety crew got to the car, Sharp climbed out on his own, the fans were on their feet cheering as they saw the driver get out of his car and walk away from the crash.

As the red flag dropped, the leaders were directly under the flag stand as they "checked up" contact occured and several cars were damaged, the worst damage was to the second place car #07 Landon Lungren.

On the restart the damage to Lungren's car was evident as he lost control and his car hit the wall coming out of turn 4. Lungren bounced off the wall and directly into the path of #4p James Peters tearing all the sheet metal off the right side of the car.

Shade held on to a comfortable lead as #57 Wally Schneider, #97 David Higgs and #11 Pat Varieka battled sometimes three wide for second place. As the field rounded the track Higgs slowed and made his way to the pits with engine trouble. The battle for second place resumed with three cars, Schneider, Varieka and now #22 Joe Baker all tried for the same spot. As the clock began running out another caution was thrown as a car spun in turn 2. Shade's car began smoking but he wasn't giving in. Schneider and Varieka were side by side and Varieka was able to take second. #77 Dale Shade took his first win of the year and limped around the track for his victory lap.

Action Performance Street Stocks (1)77 Dale Shade (2)11 Pat Varieka (3)57 Wally Schneider (4)22 Joe Baker (5)73 Rick Swank (6)4 James Peters (7)88 Billy Wright (8)26 George Lane (9)5 Kevin Zahnen (10)27 Steve Edmunds

Mini Stocks- It only took a couple laps and #22 Mark Eldridge put his car out front and stayed there for the entire 20 laps.

In the first two laps #66 Donnie Ashford had a several car lead but after the second lap his car gave way and Ashford ended his night on the trailer. As Asford relinquished his lead to second place #6 Matt Cawood, #22 Mark Eldridge wasted no time putting his car side by side with Cawood and took the lead. The battle for second continued between Cawood and now #97 Jackie Rhames but last week's winner #k9 Mike Cawood slipped underneath both of them and took the second spot. Matt Cawood seemed to have trouble and ended up losing several spots finishing in 5th place. Rhames had a good night finishing third.

The top five were #22 Mark Eldridge, #k9 Mike Cawood, #97 Jackie Rhames, #8

Mini Stocks (1)22 Mark Eldridge (2)k9 Mike Cawood (3)97 Jackie Rhames (4)888 James McCague (5)6 Matt Cawood (6)3 Ryan Vansickle (7)9b Mike Quick (8)777 Kenny Mason (9)29 Drew Smith (10) 17 Doug White

Pure Stocks - The Pure Stock 2002 points leader #48 Deric Smith took his 5th win of the year!

#17 Marvin Prentice seemed to have the race wrapped up as he led the first 8 laps of the race. #48 Deric Smith fought his way to second passing #43 Mark Reiter on lap 6. It was two laps later on lap 8 when Prentice went high coming out of turn 4, his car got loose and Prentice ended up taking a hard hit to the outside wall in turn 4 turning the lead over to #48 Deric Smith. #8 John Blood currently third in the points took over the second spot with #9 Rick Picard in third and #43 Mark Reiter in fourth.

A caution on lap 12 was thrown as the #75 Shawn Pawlak got loose and spun as he was attempting to straighten his car out on the front stretch #73 Rodney Alexander did all he could to avoid Pawlak but was unable to miss his car as it came to stop in the middle of the track. Alexander hit Pawlak in the side sending Pawlak's car head on into the wall under the flagstand ending both their nights.

With only 3 laps to go after the restart, #48 Deric Smith held on to his lead with #8 John Blood, #9 Rick Picard, #43 Mark Reiter and #27 James Strehle rounding out the top 5 spots.

Pure Stocks (1)48 Deric Smith (2)8 John Blood (3)9 Rick Picard (4)43 Mark Reiter (5)27 Marsha Edmunds (6)77 Shannon Cleveland (7)72 Dave Taulbee (8)18 Chris Shead (9)5 Chris Mark (10)1 Justin Dixon
