Veltman Wins 40 Lap Citrus Sportsman Special

by Larry MacMillan

(Inverness, Fl.) First qualifier Jimmy Thompson experienced
a short night when he completed his second lap on the
clock, he lost an engine after turning a 15.355 second lap.
It just wasn't his night and he was done. Fast Qualifier
was Chris Hooker who turned a 15.132 second run on a 150
degree racetrack that was coming up. Second fast qualifier
was Tom Jones, Jr. followed by the eventual winner of the
40 lap sportsman special Mike Veltman who banked $700 for
his effort over the thirteen of fifteen qualifers that
took the green flag. Twelve finished in the 2-caution
flag race. Mark Dominique was unable to start. Bill
Oestreicher seesawed from second to fifth and back up to
second when the checkers flew. Buddy Kessler held out for
third over Chris Hooker and George Neumann.

Kevin Bryant became the sixth different Late Model winner
hauling the load of 17 cars for the entire 30 laps.
Coming into this weekend's feature run he was sitting
in 21st place in this 40-car point race. Last week's
125 was not a point race and this pickup of 100 points
for the win will move him up the ladder. Herb Hoefler
had his hands full of Billy Bechtelheimer who did all
he could to hold on to second before he gave out of
tires to hold that outside groove falling back five spots
at the finish. Hoefler held off Jim Smith, Danny
Johnson, and Scott Grossenbacher locking in the top
five. Fifteen of the 17 starters finished with Mike
Bresnahan running into mechanical problems that he was
unable to correct in a short trip to the pits. Heat
winners were Jim Smith and Perry Lovelady.

Apparent Street Stock winner Corky Miley weighed in too
light and lost what would have been his second win of the
season. Defending champion Travis Nichols inherited the
win and moved to within four points of Mike Bell in
quest of his second point crown in a row. Danny Cretty
pulled off a second place finish after Miley's D.Q.
Ernie Reed who at one point was racing for the lead
held out for third followed by Dwayne Thompson and Jo
Viverito was also scored the win in the first heat.
Nichols picked up 10 points for the win l the second
heat.

In Mini Stock action, a man who hasn't seen Victory Lne
for over 7 years, Jim Desnoyer set the pace from the
green flag and took home the checkered flag over a 21
car field. Kevin Harrod chased him for the final 8
laps for a second place run. Tom Giddings out ran
point leader Robbie Yoakam in the race for third with
Jay McKenzie locking onto fifth. Giddings and Max
Seaman won the heat races.

Richie Smith was the dominate force again in the Hobby
Stock feature, moving from 17th to the winner's circle
with just three laps left in their 20 lap adventure.
Second running Dean Lawyer who lead on that 17th lap
finished second and was wearing an illegal aluminum
wheel that took him out of the picture. Rookei Curtis
Neumann would have inherited second but with no muffler
and weighing in light he would wind up in 22 finishing
position. Daniel Webster, David Amundson, Tim Whitehead
and Glenn Colyer moved up to fill in the top five spots.
Dustin Aaron and Whitehead won the heat races.

Tim Wilson logged his second win of his rookie Thunder
Stock season only to lose it in tech inspection for
wearing an illegal wheel rim. Defending Champion
Stuart Madison inherited the win for his third of the
year. Jerry Hoover was right on his bumper at the
finish line with a new name being added to the hot shoe
list in the beginner division in the way of Dale Shelton.
Jeff and Josh Teague ran fourth and fifth respectively.
In round two of Thunder feature racing it was a first
time ever winner in Todd Downs. Victor Shahid, Jr.
outran Michael Wilson, Robin Bauer and Ron Gordon. Both
races started 16 cars. Heat winners were Jerry Hoover,
Todd Downs, and Alice Jacobson.

Next week will be a regular 6 division program and the
Late Models will be making preparations for the big
$10,000 to win "Powell Memorial 125" scheduled for
Saturday, May 25th.
