Sport Allen Wins at New Smyrna

by Larry Lype

The TBARA Winged Sprint Series made their third visit
of the 2002 season to Robert Hart's fast half mile
speedplant in New Smyrna on April 27th. Two fast
heat races were won by Shane Butler in a close
finish over brother Keith and Matt Mercer won the
second heat race, in the only Ford powered car in
the TBARA. The feature had TBARA's only female
driver Wendy Mathis starting on the pole with Frank
Scimeca starting on the outside of the front row.
On the original start, the flagman did not like the
start and called them back for another start. On the
second start the race was on and Sport Allen took
the lead on the first lap. The fans were treated to
great racing action throughout the field. The only
yellow of the night was on lap 21 when Keith Butler
spun in turn four while running second. On the
restart the order was Sport Allen, Shane Bulter,
Matt Mercer, Dude Teate, and Bo Hartley. When the
green flag fell, Sport took control and led the way
to the checkered flag. Sport and car owner Taylor
Andrews and the crew celebrated in victory lane.
Rounding out the top five were Shane Butler, Matt
Mercer, Dude Teate and Bo Hartley. The next race
for the TBARA Winged Sprint Series is in Cordele.
GA on Saturday May 11.
