Sport Allen And Jim Rahman Go Back To Back In TBARA & Cars At NSS

Sport Allen took the lead on the first lap and led all the way to claim his second straight TBARA Winged Outlaw Sprint feature while Jim Rahman waited till the white flag lap to take the lead. He went on to take his second consecutive Classic Auto Racing Series win as the two traveling groups headlined the show Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway.

With the regular New Smyrna Super Late Model, Late Model, and Modified classes running at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, The TBARA and Classic Cars gave the evening a totally different feel, and the action didn't dissappoint the large crowd on hand.

Keith Butler and Matt Mercer topped the sprint car heats, but neither would have a chance at the Barfield "Clean-Sweep" Award this night. Wendy Mathis led the field into turn one at the start of the 25-lap feature, but Sport Allen got hooked up on the outside and blasted to the lead out of turn two and was a half-straightaway in front as the field completed lap one.

Keith Butler was on the charge with his younger brother Shane in tow and Keith caught Allen by the midway point of the race. However, the two made contact in turn three with just a few laps remaining and Keith Butler spun to bring out the race's only caution flag.

Instead of going to the rear of the field, Butler moved up to Allen and did a little "nerfing" resulting in his ultimate disqualification from the race. When the green reappeared, Allen drove off to an easy win in his immaculate Dayton-Andrews Dodge sponsored machine.

Allen made it two TBARA main events in a row as he also won last week at Ocala Speedway. Shane Butler held on for second followed by Matt Mercer and point leader Dude Teate. Bo Hartley solved a heat race brake problem and drove a great race to round out the top five. Wayne Reutimann, Sr., Gary Gimmler, Scotty Adema, Paul Madden, and Sonny Hartley completed the top ten.

The Classic Auto Racing Series heats went to rookie drivers as Patrick Sanders dominated the first heat while Mike Samples beat Al Hagan in a photo finish in heat two. Samples led the first four laps of the 20-lap main, but Hagan had his '32 Ford coupe hooked up and took the lead just before the only caution of the race came out for Frank Conrad's spin. Coming down for the white flag, Hagan's car slipped allowing Jim Rahman and Eddie Thornton to power by. Rahman led the lap that counted as he claimed his second consecutive CARS win, also topping last week's race at Orlando Speedworld. Thornton followed in second trailed by a disappointed Hagan. Mike Samples backed up his heat race win with a solid fourth place feature finish while Mike Albert drove a steady race to garner fifth spot. Simeon Spagnuolo, Patrick Sanders, Harvey Ewing, E.T. McGhee, and Keith Roberts rounded out the top ten.

Twenty-four Super Stocks took to the track and ran a surprisingly safe 15-lap feature. Rick Johns grabbed the lead early-on and zipped to a comfortable win but was DQ'd in tech handing the win to Ted Helms. Ron Whaley, Mike Wiezoreck, Bill Stacy, and Ted Head trailed Helms to the checker. The Mini-Stocks went green to checker with David Castello the class of the field as he topped early leader Tim "Missleman" McPhail, Ted Vulpius, Troy Kruse, and Dick Laszlo for the win. Donnie Williams led all the way to capture the Sportsman feature despite race-long pressure from Rick Johns who had to settle for second. Ron Lufcy, Billy Spade, and David Gibbs completed the top five.
