Lawton Minchew Takes Late Model Win at Volusia Speedway Park

The fans enjoyed an autograph session with
several of the drivers. Between the heat races and feature
races drivers came into the grandstands and signed a
variety of souvenirs for the fans at Volusia Speedway Park
Saturday night.

DeLand Truck Cener Late Models - It was a good night from
the beginning for #23 Lawton Minchew. Minchew won his
heat race and went on to win his first feature in 2002.

On lap 1 @17 Joe Kump lost a nose piece and the handling
of his racecar, after winning his heat race, Kump ended
up with a 8th place finish.

Minchew took the lead from #02 Travis Rhoden on lap 9 and
had to work to hold onto it for their entire 30 lap
feature race.

A fierce battle for second between #88 Chris Vogel and
#53 John Rankin ended as Rankin got into the rear of
Vogel and damaged his car sending him to the pits, Vogel
was able to continue and finish 2nd.

Last week's winner #11 Roho Sims fought his way to 3rd
with 10 laps to go. Sims tried to take 2nd but just
couldn't get around Vogel. The battle between Vogel gave
Minchew a several car length lead all the way to the
checker flag.

OB's Restaurant and Lounge Hobby Stocks-A Main - Caution
after caution didn't stop #19 Kory Bush from taking his
first win in 2002. It wasn't an easy task as Bush had
to fight off hard charging #46 Travis Gamble every lap.

Polesitter #8c Jeremy Cline had his share of problems as
he slid high on the track and lost several positions
finishing the race in 17th place.

After the checker flag dropped, #50 Pat Taulbee and #51
Steve Oldaker got together. Taulbee hit the inside wall
in turn one while Oldaker was able to keep it off the wall
and just spin.

turn 1, he gathered it up and made it through the turn.
The #89 (no name) and #7 James Strehle weren't so lucky,
they got together, Strehle rode the outside wall and
became wedged against the wall and the #89 car until the
wreckers pulled his car down off the wall.

2002.

Baker was fast from the green but #11 Pat Varieka was right
on Baker's bumper for several laps until #007 Todd Ponce
made it around Varieka to take a 2nd place finish.

Several cautions plagued the feature, on lap 8 a pile up
on the front stretch gathered up 4 cars, #23 Wray Shaffer,
#4 James Peters, #74 Mike Lanich, and #24 Randy Strehle
on the restart #23 Wray Shaffer got into #24 Randy Strehle,
they ended up in the outside wall in turns 1 & 2, Shaffer
slid down the track. Strehle fired his car and ran into
Shaffer. Strehle's actions sent him to the pits and
on the trailer for the remainder of the night.

Mini Stocks - It was the Triple 8 of Jamie McCague taking
the lead from #6 Matt Cawood with only two laps to go
and holding off the Cawood brothers till the checker flag
flew.

In the beginning of the 20 lap Mini Stock feature it looked
like the Cawood brothers had it sewed up but Triple 8
Jamie McCague never let up on leader #6 Matt Cawood and
was able to get around Cawood for his first feature win
in 2002. Brothers #6 Matt Cawood and #k9 Mike Cawood
finished a strong 2nd and 3rd.

first lap as he spun and got into the outside wall under
the flagstand, he tried to continue but shredded a tire in
the crash and had to retire his racecar for the night.
