#11 Roho Sims Takes Late Model Win at VSP

Barberville, Fl - With threatening weather all around
the heat races started 15 minutes early and it proved
to be a great night of racing at Volusia Speedway Park
as all the features ran with few problems.

DeLand Truck Center Late Models - It was a second visit
to Victory Lane in 2002 for #11 Roho Sims. Sims took
the lead and never gave it up for the 30 lap feature
race in the Late Models.

#11 Roho Sims put alot of real estate between him and
the second place car of 2001 Point Champion #88 Paul
George. The third place position was a battle between
#99 Brent Chilson and #9 Rod Burton, the two switched
the spot back and forth several times until late in
the lap when it seemed to be a tire issue as Burton
was able to get by Chilson but he just couldn't get
by George. Childson lost 4th place to #89 Jeff
Choquette.

OB's Restaurant and Louge Hobby Stocks - A-Main #88
Dennis North picked up his first feature win in the
time shortened Hobby Stocks. North won his heat race
and took the lead in the feature from #19 Kory Bush
on lap 9. #15 Alan Peacock finished second in his
heat race and second in the feature even though his
car was smoking at the end of the race.

On the last lap the #12 Rick Friend spun in turn 4 so
it was a checker and caution at the same time as
North crossed the finish line. The top five were
North, #15 Alan Peacock, #19 Kory Bush, #88 Chris
Byle and #46 Travis Gamble.

A-Main Feature: (1)88 Dennis North (2)15 Alan Peacock
(3)19 Kory Bush (4)88b Chris Byle (6)61 Ronald Soitis
(7)0 Sheldon Kinser (8)19 Kory Bush, (9)3 Kenny Waters
(10)8 Jeremy Cline.

B-Main: #64 Trevor Gamble seemed to be loose in the
beginning of the race but was able to get a grip and
win the B-Main feature in the Hobby Stocks.

A crash on lap 2 in turn 1 was serious enough to bring
out the red flag as #38 Doug Fisher came to rest on the
outside retaining wall. The safety crew were on hand
to help Fisher out of his wrecked racecar. Fisher
was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

B-Main Feature: (1)64 Trevor Gamble (2)29 Tom Hughes
(3)50 Pat Taulbee (4)419 ? (5)62 Kevin Boitis (6)17

(9)30x Philip Connor (10)13b Phillip Brown

Action Performance Street Stocks - Local driver #97
David Higgs won his first feature race of 2002 but
it wasn't an easy ride as 2001 Points Champion #22
Joe Belkey was on top of Higgs the last several
laps.

#07 Landon Lungren put his car out front and held off
a hard charging group of Street Stocks for 6 laps.
#54 Tim Hughes put the pressure on #4 James Peters
and took both positions for the lead but by lap 8 it
was #5 Kevin Zahnen's race as he got by Hughes and
took newcomer #007 Todd Ponce with him. Zahnen's
lead was short lived as the Ponce got into Zahnen in
turn 4 causing both cars to spin. Hughes also got
gathered up in the mess and all three cars restarted
in the rear.

The lead was turned over to #97 David Higgs and it
was his race to the end. The battle for second was
won by #22 Joe Baker and #23 Wray Shaffer took a
strong third. The fight for 4th was between #11 Pat
Varieka and #00 John Ripley and in the end it was
Varieka taking the checker ahead of Ripley for 4th.
Ripley settled for a 5th place finish.

Feature: (1)97 David Higgs (2)22 Joe Baker (3)23 Wray
Shaffer (4)11 Pat Varieka (5)00 John Ripley (6)54 Tim

Pure Stocks - A caution filled race didn't stop #9 Rick
Picard from taking the lead from #8 John Blood on lap
4 and putting his car in Victory Lane.

On lap 1, the caution dropped as polesitter #8h Chris
Heaney spun. The race didn't stay green long as
debris caused and second caution on lap 2. Lap 3
wasn't lucky either as three cars got together in
turn 3 & 4. #48 Deric Smith, #09 Rick Wilson and
#64 Tony Thacker were involved in the third caution
of the night.

On the restart #9 Rick Picard attempted to take the
lead from #8 John Blood but just couldn't get by until
the next lap when he tried low and took the lead for
the rest of the race.

Pure Stocks Feature: (1)9 Rick Picard (2)8 John Blood
(3)69 Brad Fender (4)75 Shawn Pawlak (5)23 Mark Reiter
(6)73 Steve Buker (7)27 Marsha Edmunds (8)21 Joe Epton
Jr. (9)48 Deric Smith (10)18 Chris Shead

Mini-Stocks - #9b Michael Quick had a fast racecar from
the beginning and ended up in Victory Lane with all
his freinds and teammate #97 Jackie Rhames.

A battle for third proved to be too much for #00 Mark
Paterniti as his ill handling racecar gave away and
he spun bringing out the caution and gather up #16
Paul McAtee and #30 LJ Klemons. #66 Donnie Ashford
took third and seemed to have a competitive racecar
until a spin on lap 6 put his car in the pits along
with #17 Doug White.

#27 Joey Haslauer lead the first 7 laps of the race
but Quick was gaining on him fast and took the lead
on lap 8. Haslauer tried going high and lost a
position to #6 Matt Cawood putting him in third.

Time ran out as the caution was thrown on lap 16 and
on the restart it was green and white and the final
lap saw #9b Michael Quick ahead of #6 Matt Cawood,
#27 Joey Haslauer, #k9 Mike Cawood and #888 James
McCague.
