Brent Chilson Wins Late Model Feature at Volusia Speedway Park

DeLand Truck Center Late Models - With one of the best
looking racecars on the track when the race started,
#99 Brent Chilson ended the race looking just as good
in Victory Lane.

Chilson, a local driver, battled with South Florida driver
#17 Joe Kump as they both had fast Late Model racecars.
Kump's car lifted several inches off the track as he came
out of the turns and at one point his car got into #53
John Rankin and pulled off a piece of Rankin's body
carrying it with him several laps until a caution was thrown
and an official stopped him on the front stretch removing
the debris from Kump's car.

Lap traffic always causes concern and Chilson had to deal
with it several times but was able to clear them and
hold on to his lead.

With only 5 laps to go, Kump got loose and lost his 2nd
place spot to #88 Chris Vogel. The top 5 were #99
Brent Chilson, #88 Chris Vogel, #17 Joe Kump, #57 Chuck
Julien, and #241 Greg Ward.

OB's Resturant and Lounge Hobby Stocks-A-Main - #1m Mark
Kinsey proved the theory it doesn't matter where you
startm it's where you finish. Kinsey started 10th and
worked his way to the front by lap 6 and took the feature
win.

#52 Chris Waldron seemed to have the car to beat as he
held on to the lead through cautions and tight racing.

When Kinsey took the lead on lap 6 the leaders go spread
out, #19 Joe Belkey was passing cars and made it to the
top five by lap 7. #51 Steve Oldaker has had trouble the
past few weeks and he spun in turn 3 but straightened out
and kept going. #96 Bill Littell and #55 Al Sanville
weren't as lucky as they spun and had to be towed to the
pits. Belkey also had trouble and ended up in the pits
on lap 11.

Kinsey kept it out front, Waldron and #72 Lawrence Edney
held on to 2nd and 3rd but the battle began for 4th
between #88 Dennis North and #18 Richard Price. When the
checker fell it was North ahead of Price for the 4th spot.

Travis Gamble won his first feature of the new season.

Polesitter #26h Tim Hogan lost the lead to Gamble on
lap 3 and ended up with damage to his racecar as he
spun in turn 2. On the restart #33 Grady Christian
jumped the start, passing cars and was put back three
spots but still finished in the top 5.

Once Gamble got out fron the battle was for 2nd and
3rd #19 Kory Bush and #26 George Lane went back
and forth but it was Bush taking 2nd and keeping it
till the end.

#38 Michael Jones and #33 Grady Christian neglected to
take their cars across the scales after the race and
lost their finishing spots.

Action Performance Street Stocks - It was a first time
win for #23 Wray Shaffer from Lake Helen. Shaffer had
to work for his win as strong running #11 Pat Varieka
did all he could to take the win but had to settle for
a second place finish.

Every caution brought th field together but Shaffer had
a fast racecar and was able to hold on to the lead ahead
of a fast group of cars. #5 Kevin Zahnen had his hands
full trying to hold on to his second place spot but had
trouble late in the race and finished 6th.

On lap 8 #44 David Showers and #00 John Ripley got together
and spun in turn 2. Ripley won his head race and knew
he had a good car so he pushed it as hard as he could and
took home a 3rd place finish.

2001 Points Champion #22 Joe Baker worked his way to a 4th
place finish and #54 Tim Hughes fought his way to a 5th
place finish after having trouble and losing several spots
early in the race.

Pure Stocks - #48 Deric Smith has been racing it up as he
won another feature race Saturday night at VSP.

With only one lap in the books #21 Allie Owens and #09
Richard Wilson got together on the front stretch and
Owens ended up climbing out of her car as it rested on
it's roof. Wilson came to a stop sideways beside Owens'
car. As the safety crew uprighted her racecar and towed
it to the pits she was able to walk on her own as the
#75 Shawn Pawlak restarted the race in the front but
wasn't able to keep #48 Deric Smith back for long. By
lap 3 Smith was leading and by lap 8 it was a battle
between the heat race winners Smith and #9 Rick Picard
and when the 16 laps were complete Smith crossed the
start/finish line first with Picared second, #23 Mark
Reiter, #27 Marsha Edmunds and 69 Brad Fender, Jr.
rounding out the top 5 spots.

(9) 64 ? (10)8h Chris Heaney

Mini-Stocks - It was a caution filled race but at the same
time it was action packed with the lead changing at the
end and #66 Donnie Ashford taking the checker.

On lap one it all started and #32 Chris Luman got loose in
turn 4 and #0 Dan Paterniti had nowhere to go but in his
side. Paterniti retired his car to the pits for the night.
Luman was able to return to the race.

The restart saw #888 James McCague leading the race with
teammates #97 Jackie Rhames and #9b Mike Quick close
behind, the Cawood brothers Matt and Mike were on their
bumpers waiting for the opportunity to take position and
win the race. #k9 Mike Cawood took the chance and made
it third and eventually fishined in 2nd.

On lap 5 #99 Charlie MacNichol lost a motor and went up in
serious smoke. #3 Ryan Vansickle and #79 Ray Hunter
couldn't see and spun. Hunter retired to the pits and
VanSickle attempted to return only to spin again, this
time Vansickle was able to continue without a caution
being thrown.
